    rice/corn shot 44 mag

I would like to make some rounds of rice or corn (popcorn) shot to shoot snakes at close range (5-10ft). The cartridge is going to be a 44 mag. Which gunpowder and how much should I use?

    1. Unique
    2. Bullseye
    3. 2400

I am planning on sealing it with a thing piece of cardboard + candle wax. I also have gas-checks that I can probably use instead, but i'm worried that it may get stuck in the barrel.

why not use actual shot ? it seems to me that the using rice or corn would have a even less effective range . I have spent a fair amount of time in snake country and rarely run into a snake , I think i would probally just buy some snake rounds given the number I would be likely to go through .even though i have not bought a loaded centerfire cartridge in ages since i have been reloading . If its just a novelty type idea then thats different . Alliant has published load data for a 200 grain bullet using 12.4 grains of unique and that could be a starting point .

Rice or corn is going to be very light relative to lead.
Smokelss powder needs to be captured in the case a moment to burn and to build up pressure.
The weight of a lead bullet and the crimp at the case mouth holds the burning powder back until pressure rises high enough to push the bullet out.
The rice / corn will not offer much resistance, so you will want a charge of fast burning powder.
Most of the powder will likely be blown down the barrel unburnt, with very low rice velocity.
Make sure you test your loads for adequate penetration before shooting anything alive with them.

I don't know much about black powder, and how it interacts with being ignited by modern powders etc, having said that: black powder burns very fast at atmospheric pressure, it may be appropriate for this type of biodegradable snakeshot load.

I honestly don't think rice is going to penetrate snakeskin, at least not at common handgun velocities. Usually rice loads are only powered by a primer, and are used by cowboy action shooters to practice at home. (popping balloons in the garage and whatnot.)

Here is a Youtube video you might find interesting, I'll include a link because I'm not sure this "imbed" thing is going to work!

Thanks Bob! I think I'm going to try and edit my post, just so I'll know how to do it next.
