ok i'm very new to reloading. I was given a dillon 650 with dillon 45 acp conversion and dies. can i use oem die sets from lets RCBS or LEE. I know the dies are a standard size but will they work well with my dillon press

The other dies will work with your 650. However, IMO, the Dillon dies work the best.

A previous post of mine. I own Redding, RCBS, and Lee die sets. I haven't used the Redding or RCBS dies in the 650. So I can't compare those to the dillon dies in the 650. But IMO the dillon dies are worth the extra cost over Lee for use in a 650.

I'd have no problems running lee if that was all I could afford and the smoothness issue would bother me less if I was on a single stage.

But you've got a nice press that cost a pretty penny why go cheap on the dies? I already owned the lee dies so I wasn't eager to spend more money on another die set for the same caliber. But the dillon dies just work better with the 650. I can't speak about other brands, Lee and Dillon are the only dies I've used with my 650.

I like the Dillon dies better also.

I've used Redding and RCBS dies in my Dillon 650 with no adverse results.

And that was a very generous gift! Enjoy!

I can understand why Dillon dies would feed cases better due to the wide mouth, but it seems that the Lee dies would size the case farther down.

For a progressive press, it looks like better feeding would be worth the trade off. However, for a single stage or turret maybe you would want the better sizing.

Is there a need to size cases farther down, maybe glocked brass?

Dillon Dies I think are best for Progressive machines because the FL dies are spring loaded, when it deprime and FL case, the spring action ejects the primer clear of the case whichmake the priming easier, on a regular FL die like a RCBS, the decaping pin can actually capture and hold the fired primer in place, when you go down to prime it, the old primer will be re-inserted in the case, thus defeating the purpose, I've experienced this in both 550B and XL650. Now if I can help it, I only run with Dillon if possible. The saying is buy once cry once....get the Dillon, in most cases they are about $20 more than the RCBS, and Hornady...slightly more than the Redding

Only Dillon dies I use on my 650 are the crimp dies. All others are RCBS. Just personal preference.

I used Dillon dies on my 2 XL650's with a Redding comp seaters exclusively. Each XL650 is set up dedicated to one caliber. My personal preference.

                          That's what I was thinking.

Some people run their brass through a Lee FCD to de-glockify it. Maybe that's unnecessary if you can get the sizer down far enough. I wonder if someone has done a comparison...

the larger dillion mouth on the die will help on a 650 not needed but smooth things out.
When the case is feed onto the shell holder upon sizing smaller mouth dies sometimes catch on the case mouth and where the dillion have a big mouth and will not.
