    reloading noob question

I'm new to reloading rifle cartridges (I've reloaded pistol ammo already) and I was wondering if it is okay to use magnum large rifle primers instead of standard rifle primers in the 6.8 mm SPC cartridge. I bought a box of 100 large magnum primers because that was all they had behind the register at my local indoor gun range.

    Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't, but that's just me. Sure, it may work just fine, but do you really want to take that chance.

Yes, you can use the magnum primers but you will need to start the load process at the starting point and work up again looking for pressure signs. just don't swap magnum primers for regular primers if you already have a load that is at or near max. Magnum primers burn a little hotter for a little longer and can raise velocities by up to 200 fps with a corresponding rise in pressure.

I used mag primers in my 30-06 all the time, just as cav said you just need to work the load up again. Different brands of Primers also have a little more power than others, don't know if it was my imagination but Fed primers seem to have a little more umph than CCI or Win

I use CCI small rifle magnum primers for all my .223 reloads

Cool, thanks everyone for your input (calguns is awesome). I think I'm just going to fire the 50 or so cases that I primed this morning, decapp and start over with regular large rifle primers.

My load development cartridges and new brass all use small rifle primers (All new SSA brass now use small rifle primers) but I have a bunch of old once fired SSA brass with large rifle primers (approx. 200 cases).

Another issue I have with these primers is that there wasn't much friction when I seated them. In fact, three fell out of the pockets when I removed the cases from the shell holder.

I'll just eat the cost of the 100 primers and consider this lesson learned.

r these once fired? Assuming ur dies/decapping pin is adjusted correctly, enlarged primer pocket is a sign of over-preasure. You don't want that spent primer to fall in ur AR lower.

if u want to stick to small rifle primer, use Hornady brass.

I bought a bunch of nato34 primer which is equivalent to mag and that's all I use -10%.

                Thanks again everyone!
