45acp brass, small primer pockets getting more common.

I was prepping some 45acp and 9mm brass we shot last Monday. I was primimg the 45acp cases when I ran into small primer pockets. I sorted out the brass and I found out that the new Federals from Wallyworld my friend brought all had small primer pockets.
You will see in the photo the size difference between the small and large pockets and the difference on the name stamp.
Heads up on the Federal brass my friends

Not suprising. CCI tightened their belts and started using SP primers with no ill effects. It it not strange for other manufactures to follow suit to make a buck. This will eventually trickel down to others. I'm not sure if they use SP Mag Primers or standard SPP's. When in doubt, Use SP mag primers and work up a new load.

I've got a few hundred of those that I'm reloading for the 2nd time now, plus a few hundred more factory loads. I use WSP's with 230 grain plated LFP's and 5 - 5.7 grains of Bullseye. So far, so good. The Glock 30 and Springfield 1911 eat 'em right up. Next I'm going to try some 200 grain hard cast lead RN's, with between 4 and 5 grains of Bullseye. I'm also going to try them with between 5 and 6 grains of Unique and 3.5 to 5.5 of Trail Boss.

I heard from someone at the range that they went to these so they could use the "Green" primers, whatever those are.

I only find one or two at a time for some reason.

I converted two of them over to LPP tonight. Put a hornady large pocket reamer bit in a drill and it sizes the small pocket to the large size in a few seconds. It still gives the primer a nice and snug fit.

Interesting. How many flutes is the reamer. Most small reamers are designed to ream .010-.025 chip load over diameter. Guess I will have to check that out.

Four flutes. It is clearly not designed to do this, but brass is so soft it acts a mill basically. Plus it doesn't cut on the end of the bit, so you can feel when you hit the bottom of the pocket.

That's interesting, a lot of work too! I think I will just save them aside until I collected enough to do a batch (about 50 pieces saved).

It is really not that bad. I just deprime, put them in my bench vice very lightly, drill the pocket out, size, then prime. The extra work is less than 30 seconds each. The drilling only takes 5 to 10 seconds.

It is going to save you work in the future when you have to hand sort your LPPs from your SPPs in your range pickups. In the long run it is easier to just convert them over and be done with it, IMHO.

After loading last nite on the 650 i may be reconsidering that idea......what a pain in de azz.....

so is the consensus regular small primers or magnum small primers? Does the charge work out about the same or are most having to adjust for the small primers?

                            thnx Art
