    .45ACP with small primers

I've got a bunch of Federal .45ACP brass that uses small primers. For reloading this, should I use a small pistol or small magnum pistol primer?

Do I need to vary the loads from standard .45ACP recipes for this brass?

    Thanks for helping the newbie.

Regular small primers....velocity may vary so unless you gave a chrono....stay midrange on the loads and you should be fine....hate them myself!

Use standard primers. If your brass has the small flash holes then you'll be about 50fps slower than normal. If your brass has the large flash holes you'll be at normal velocities. If you do a search I've posted lots of data about the topic.

      Hope this helps.

If you don't want them I will take them. All these people discarding these cases makes them cheap to reload, and they reload just fine. Even the primers are cheaper to purchase. Only problem most people have with them is if they get in the mix on a progressive they will jam up at the priming station. So they find that annoying and just chuck them instead of making a seperate bin for them. I check my brass and keep things seperated so I don't have that problem. I say save them for a rainy day, or sell them.

That's the Federal NT brass. It shoots just fine when you reload it with small primers.

I would separate them from your other brass but they do just fine.

That was once the only company, now Fiocchi, Blazer, and a few others now have spp. It's a trend that I believe will over take large primers in a couple years. Not only is it cheaper to manufacture and reload it pleases the tree huggers with less lead fumes.

I've heard you can also use small rifle primers to offset the difference in power. Never tried that personally, but there was a guy on "The High Road" who suggested it...

I separate them out and keep 'em. Fortunately nearly all the stuff I see is LPP, but you never know in the future. Yes, the SPP ones work, but I still don't see why they didn't just use non-toxic LPP and stick with the SAAMI spec.

I own a Dillon 650 so the best thing about ssp is I don't have to change anything in my priming system when I go from 9mm to. 45 now. Simply reduces some setup time.

I separated them from the LPP Winchester cases and loaded them both with 230gr Plated Flat Points and 5.0 gr of Bullseye. I'll see if either my 1911 or G30 notices any difference between the two, and factory loaded Federals and WWB.

Do you have a chrono? Be nice to have the results documented.
