    New brass - should I resize/prep?

    Hey all,

I'm loading factory new Winchester .223 casings for the first time. Should new casings be resized with a re-sizing die or should I assume they are they good to be primed and charged?

Yes, you should resize them. The mouths might be slightly out of round from shipping.

I just run them over the expander ball if the necks are misshapen but other than that you shouldn't need to FL resize new brass. However if you're using 1X fired brass from _____ vendor you should even if they have processed the brass for you.

A slight chamfer and O.A.L check might be in order also....

I do not and never had any problems. I do look them over for defects such as posted here and toss those. If the mouth is bent I use a bullet to gently round it back out then load.

Just the other side of the coin.

Sizing new brass just means one less reload from them -- A check for O.L and a square mouth should be enough. If not, you probably need to change brands.

While I am fairly new to the reloading game, I do not (assuming the brass passes a visual inspection). Granted the first shot with the new brass is not as accurate (because of the slight variations), it works for me...

Yes....If you are in a hurry for anything besides re-loading ......then pick your second choice...building rounds for your firearm should require your time and total concentration .....if your in a hurry....then buy your ammo......

I don't think time was mentioned as a factor -- However, why waste energy on un-necessary work?
