    Im in a pickle...sealing Blanks....

im running out of ideas and some new direction would really help me out! i am trying to seal .50 cal blanks. After crimping some cases have a hole dia. of about .050''-.150''....i need a sealant to close that hole.

BUT there are special circumstances that it must stand up to...

    1) it needs to be thick enough to plug the hole and not seep into the case (a little is ok but none would be best).
    2) it needs to dry Hard. not soft.
    3) when fired it needs to break apart into multiple parts (small parts).
    4) when heated it CANNOT buildup. it either needs to break up or burn away.
    5) it needs to stand up to vibrations via tansport and when its linked and being used.

the color does not matter. hopefully does not smell, but a little is ok.

i have tried glue/nail adhesive/gasket seal/paint..etc im running out of ideas. i need help so that i can get this ball rolling correctly...

    thanks in advance!

Would paper mache work? don't think it'd leave a residue, and it burns... Just a thought from left field.

Candle wax isnt hard and will build up a coating, won't burn off.

              Modeling clay?

There's some very tough clays out there that are firm enough to use for your purpose, and will harden as they dry without deforming. Although you should note: Some clays will shrink a LOT and will be likely to move, so pick one that doesn't shrink much.

              Plasticine...

There's some good stuff, it's what's used in claymation type stop-mo.

After a little more searching, there's 3 types of clay that would fit your purpose.

Oil-based clays- don't dry out, only become softer as temps rise, but won't run.
Polymer Clays- become harder when baked, I.E. hot gun will likely set the clay if it's not fired quickly.

Paper or Cellulose clays. Harden in air to a lightweight material. Some don't shrink much when dry. Will be frangible in this application

Best choices= Plasticine, Oil, and Paper Clay (cellulose).

How about Bondo, the only thing is you will have to do a little batch at a time or else it will dry on you.

There is a automotive sealer called the Right stuff made by Permatex (not cheap) but its thick and will not drop in the case, just not sure on your number 3 as to how small it needs to break up? and #4 it has a heat rating of 500degs

                    Just a thought. Sealing wax.

I lived near a sealing wax factory in Visalia when I was a kid and we'd dumpster dive metric buttloads of the stuff. http://www.ehow.com/how_6654742_make...aling-wax.html

Just dip the tips and let dry.

PLPremium, thick drys super hard extremely strong and sure it would bust up under that kind of pressure.

Could you crimp a felt or paper wad of some sort during the crimping?

I second sealing wax. Might be tough to work with of you're in a hurry though. Trick is keeping the wax in the right temperature zone. I assume we're talking about a rose crimp here and not a paper card over the end of a slightly rolled case. Sealing wax should allow you to form a nice button over the end of the rose crimp.

sealing wax....its an idea....just have to figure a way to cover multiple cases that are standing up. you dont want to dip them because powder may fall out when doing so.

yes these are a 6 petal rose crimp. they are crimped at a 45 degree angle. i want a 60 degree but to have one EDM'd was going to be 2k!!! i told them go fly a kite.... but a 60 degree would help with bringing in the petals.

i already contacted Hernon and the problem is that i would waste mor product then actually using it. plus its 400.00/liter.....

Years ago we used to use "water glass" , sodium silicate, for a sealant on brass shot shells -- FWIW --
