    Ammo Cans and 9mm Capacity

Great midweek lunchtime pick up courtesy of Craigslist. Picked up 2-50 cal ammo cans and 4-30 cal ammo cans for $30. They are in great condition.

(one 30 cal can is missing as I gave it to a friend)

I am posting this because I was curious as to how many 9mm rounds boxed brand new fit in either sized box.

20 boxes x 50 rounds = 1000 rounds total of 9mm fit in the 50 cal ammo can.
4 rows of 5 boxes fills it to the brim.

8 boxes x 50 rounds = 400 rounds total of 9mm fit in the 30 cal ammo can.
7 boxes vertically, and 1 box laid horizontal across the top.

Actually, I took the ammo out of the box and stuffed in the can. I think 50 cal ammo can took about 1,500 9mm ammo and about 1,000 223 Rem. I didn't really counted them though.

I usually take my ammo out of the boxes too. Much more fits in there.

      300 7.62x54r fits in a 30cal can.

We should post up how much ammo fits in the different sized cans. Anyone got some infor on 12guage ammo in either 30cal or 50cal cans?

I agree about starting a thread of how much boxed and loose ammo of different sizes fit in different ammo cans.

Loose ammo I will be able to store more in each ammo can but I am OCD about organization. Lol.

Your not going to like this. There is no set amount that you can get into an ammo can. It depends on the shape of the box not the caliber. An example when I first started shooting I was using the Tula white box (1990s ammo) for my AK. I could almost get the whole case (1000 rnd/50boxes) in. I had only a few extra boxes. Then they changed the factory to Wolf black box and I could not even get 900 in (45 BOXES). The boxes were all 20 rounds. The Yellow boxes took up even more space and the Wolf Classic took up the most.

Boxed ammo yes, loose ammo will be fairly consistent. Here's what I've found.

1200rds of 5.56 will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
600rds of 5.56 will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
1750rds of .40SW will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
1000rds of .40SW will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
            140rds of 12ga 2.75 will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
            250rds of 12ga 2.75 will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
640rds of .308 will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
320rds of .308 will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
1300rds of .45ACP will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
770rds of .45ACP will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
2200rds of 9mm will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
1200rds of 9mm will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.

I used to do that also until there was a recall on some WWB ammo and I didn't have the lot numbers anymore to cross-reference with because I had tossed the boxes. Ended up just crossing my fingers and hoped that I didn't have any recalled ammo in the can.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?
