    30-30 Seating Die?

Looking for a 30-30 seating die that references off of the ogive of the bullet rather than the top of the bullet. I have looked through MidwayUSA's offerings, but the descriptions offer no clues.

Secondly, can someone educate me on how I go about establishing the proper seating depth so that the bullet is just off (where's a good starting standoff?) the rifling? I know that I need to take the measurement from my rifle's chamber, and then apply that measurement to my reloads. I just don't know which tools are needed to do this. I find this comparator:

and assume that this is the tool that establishes the overall length from bolt face to rifling.

Once I have that measurement, I would seat the bullet accordingly. But, how do I measure OAL from where the ogive of the bullet is in relation to the rifling?

I am asking all of this resultant to this thread. I have been going round and round with my 30-30 in an attempt to get it to yield consistent velocities.

This Hornady tool is good. I have both the bolt style and semi auto and they work great.
Start around 20 thousand's off the lands, try going both ways. I have a M1A Match that likes 27 thousands off the lands for SMK 168's and a certain powder. Go Figure...

What kind of spread are you getting now and please give us all the specifics of what components you are using. Another thing that makes me curious is what dies are you using now. There are so many variables that could be possible but I don't think it is your dies.

I used to use RCBS for years and years and when the wife and I started getting in a better position money wise, I upgraded to Redding. But I never had a problem in consistant velocities.

I could be something as simple as your powder throw, your case prep, or your technic.

Make sure that you trim all brass to the same length.

BOTTOM LINE: Consistancy in all the steps of handling = consistant performance from your ammo.

Click on the "this thread" link in OP for the back history. I will have to look & see what the mfg is on my dies. Have tried my old ones and a new set of Lee with no changes in the problems.

This is the seater die I use for 223. Micrometer makes it easy to dial in the thousandths.

You should also get the items below as well. The OAL guage with 30-30 modified brass will allow you to push your bullet to the lands and lock the position where the bullets hit the lands on your rife. Then use the comparator with .308" insert to get the Ogive reading. Once you get that reading you can set your new micrometer die to seat the bullets ogive to .010" off the lands.

BE SURE TO WORK UP A LOAD FROM MIN POWDER CHARGE WHEN GETTING CLOSE TO THE LANDS. Do not use a middle of the road load and seat the bullet close thinking everything will be good to go. You could destroy something from excess pressure.
