.45 ACP loads

I've started reloading .45 auto.

I have 230 gr Lead round nose bullets, Winchester 231 powder, and CCI Primers

I started with the starting load of 4.5 gr and stepped it up to 4.7 gr, but it wouldn't cycle in my 1911 (not enough powder). My reloading book doesn' say to go above 5.1 gr, but Ive seen on the internet people that load up to 5.6! Isn't that dangerous?

What are some loads anyone could recommend?

Do you have a load manual? 5.6 is not dangerous.

Yes I do have a manual and it says that 5.1 is the max load. It's the Lee Reloading Guide 2nd Edition.

the lyman manual says for a 225gr lrn, 5.8 is max

The recipes given in the reloading manuals are purposely anemic. It's to prevent someone from making a stupid mistake, blowing their gun up, and trying to sue the company that wrote the book.

Work your loads up properly, and watch for pressure signs.

My favotite load for the .45ACP is 5.0grain of 231 with a 230 grain LRN bullet. Any LP primer will do. Case OAL of 1.245 but you can experiment with that to function in your pistol.....

I use mainly 200gr projectiles because I like a faster, flatter trajectory. At 200gr, I use 6.0 grains of Unique. It's makes for a very accurate load...

What weight recoil spring are you running? 4.7 Grains of 231 should cycle your gun.

Hmm.. I've run 185gr HP, RN, and softpoints with everywhere from 5.0 to 6.0 grns of 231 and my 1911 cycles fine. I do notice that there is substantially less recoil from all these loads than any factory ammo I use.

230gr jhp, 4.0 clays, mix brass cci lp good shooting load, and clean

220gr lead RNFP and 4.9gr W231 works well. You can go up to 5.3 with 230gr lead. 4.9gr should work. Some variable could be recoils spring is a heavy one, or your gun not fully broken in.

I suggest you load all your .45 ammo with the LARGE PRIMERS. It does make a difference in fast ignition.
