    rifling on bullet

I am new to reloading 223. It is an ar cmmg upper. bullet is golden west 62gr. The brass is lake city trimmed to 1.75 and the bullet is seated to 2.25. i loaded a dummy round with no powder or primer and closed the bolt. When i took out the round there was rifling on the tip. I then put a factory xm193 round and closed the bolt and there was rifling on the tip also. I have had no issues with the factory rounds and they were seated to 2.25 also. Is this normal for an ar?

Are you sure the marks are not from the round scraping against the lugs on the way out or from something else on the way in?

Take a marker and coat the bullet tip completely, drop the test round cleanly into the chamber, then drop the bolt to seat it. Pull the bolt out very slowly to drop the test round into you hand and inspect. Regular marks all the way around indicate touching the rifling.

Also, try cleaning the chamber really well, barrel throat included before doing this test.

Another point to check. Is your barrel chambered for .223, 5.56 or .223 Wylde? If it's regular .223 that could be the issue, some NATO 5.56 bullet profiles will hit the lands in a regular .223 chambering. 5.56 and .223 Wylde have relieved throat area to prevent this.

Solution to this is to only fire ammo that does not touch lands, or have the chamber re-reamed to 5.56 or .223 Wylde specs.

      Hope this helps.

I HIGHLY doubt the bullet is touching the lands out of a factory barrel. Are you getting marks from the feed ramps when you chamber? Factory chambers are notorious for long throats. They are so long that in most cases, if you load them to touch the lands, they will not fit in the mag. And you said you loaded to 2.25".....i have NEVER seen a factory barrel that touch the lands already at this length.

The barrel is a 556 1:7 twist. I cleaned the barrel and put a red sharpie to the tip. I am dropping the round in the chamber then closing the bolt. So the bullet was not touching the feed ramps. I took some photos.

I also tried this with Remington 223 from wally world and the same thing happened.

I also put the rounds in a pmag and they barely fit but the do fit. Loaded 10 (10/30). It added to the mark on the tip when i loaded from a mag. But now my camera cant focus to take a pic.

Looks more like scratches as land/rifling marks would be more evenly spaced.

Rifling marks would only appear in a ring all the way around the bullet and barely ahead of the case mouth. The marks in the photos are too far forward to be from rifling.

Looks like general scratching from lugs, feed ramp and extraction to me.

Don't know where their from ,but land marks appear only on the ogive of the bullet the area just before the bullet becomes full diameter.

You are ok, that is just the bullet getting scraped on the splines of the the barrel extension as you extract it. My case neck used to get scratched as well until I took care of it.

Stuff the cartridge into the chamber with your thumb. If it drops out on it's own when the tip the barrel up, the bullet is not in contact.
