storing ammo

How do you store your ammo? Especially 12 ga. I have a couple ammo cans but I figure those are most handy for transport. And they are heavy. Anyone use totes? In cans do you dump loose rounds or do you leave them in factory boxes? Thanks guys.

I use ammo cans for all of it. My handgun reloads, I package by 100's and label the bags, then lay them in the ammo cans. 12 gauge and 7.62x54r are dumped into cans, along with .223. My .308 reloads, I keep only about 50 loaded at a time, they are in one of those nifty plastic clamshell cases. Ammo cans are great because they are stackable. Throw a label on the front, stack them next to your gunsafe or under the bed. If you have carpet, under the bed works good because they slide easily.

For factory new ammo, I leave them in their boxes in ammo cans. I also throw a desiccant pack in there as well.

I usually pick up my ammo cans from the gun show. Usually Surplus stores carry them too, but they are much cheaper at the show.

Gun shows usually have the 30 cal cans in various states for $5 ea.

Anyone store in plastic totes?
I used to just have the ammo in the closet, but we are moving and I want to have it all ready before moving that is all. I have 300-400 rounds of various 12 ga and I was thinking what a pain that is.

I counted all the pistol ammo and was a bit scared at how much I had bought over the last two years. Too bad 962 didn't pass or could have made a killing selling this stuff second hand . . . Just kidding, its more for me to shoot.

On a side note. I am selling some 9mm and .45 ACP ammo in the marketplace and originally tried to match or just under some other posted ammo, but I got nothing. Other than, yes sell it to me cheap, you guys have some advice for me?

I can always shoot the 9 and not sell it, but I don't need all the HP ammo, because I have enough I feel.

This is exactly what I do. desiccant and all. I buy from the surplus store because I always seem to be out of town for the gun shows. Surplus is extremely convenient, and factoring gun show parking, entry cost, and fuel costs it's a no brainer. (if you were going anyways though....)

I do NOT use plastic because I don't feel good about it. I'm much happier with an airtight container, and the rubber seal on the ammo cans gives me much more confidence that I'll be air tight. My cartridges sit in a shelf in the garage and I'd hate to have moist garage air seeping into a "tackle box". (<--- this is all my uneducated experience)

Since I do not shoot by the hundreds of cartridges I'm getting into the habit of taking ammo out of the cans and putting them in plastic closable reloading boxes for the range. Large Rifle boxes that hold 50 rounds can fit in large jacket pockets and makes it more convenient for transport to and from the car to the range booth.

One of the ammo cans has a strap of webbing used by climbers to tie swiss seats or tie anchors tied to the carry handle and pull handle. This can be slung over a shoulder like any rifle bag so I can choose to carry the rifle by sling or the ammo can by sling.
