Hornady Customer Service - Thumbs Down so far.

I made a call into Hornady customer service because I am having a problem with their OAL gauge tool and the Grendel modified case gauge.

The modified case screws into one end of the tool, but in doing so, part of the tool also sticks up inside the case, not leaving enough room for a 120 or 140 grain bullet to sit inside.

After explaining my problem, the technician told me, I must be doing something wrong, because the end of the tool sits flush with the case head. I got pretty frustrated because he didn't know what he was talking about. Then, after picking one up, he finally understood the problem.

He then told me (he wasn't joking either), I need to use lighter bullets! I was like WTF? 120 or 123 gr bullets are normal for the Grendel. He then proceeded to tell me the old school method of using a fired case to note bullet seating.

I told him, I bought the OAL gauge to take accurate measurements. If I did it any other way, I wouldn't need to buy their product. I actually had to ask him, if they would modify their OAL gauge for me (simple enough for them..a cut and some grinding). He hesitantly transferred me to the custom shop.

I will try and not to buy tools from Hornady in the future. They took a month to read their e-mails when I told them the decapping pin in my New Dimension dies broke. RCBS and Redding have way better service IMO.

I'll wait to see what the custom shop says. So far, I am not a happy camper.

Did you try to simply send the broken decapping pin back to Hornady? I've broken several reloading parts from different companies and without exception, they all sent me replacement parts at no charge and no questions asked. Just a nice letter requesting a replacement and the broken part enclosed with the letter.

The decapping pin was the cherry on top. I have bigger issues with them.

Not to mention .32 gas checks are on back order for months everywhere. Bastards.

But yeah, I feel your pain. I'm having a bit of a mystery OAL situation as well, such that I'm just going to make a cerrosafe cast.

(Which, incidentally, can be had in San Leandro at less than half the price of Midway/Brownells/etc:

I have called them several times over the last 10 years and have always had excellent service and all parts, including a complete second hand die replaced free. They have been good to me. Lee is another story.

I've never had anything but fantastic service from Hornady (well, one time some extra explaining was needed ).

            Sorry for your experience.

I also have had nothing but great service from them. I always call them not e-mail. Have you thought about small washers on the threads so the case doesnt drop down as far on the gauge ? there is alot of thread there and You would still measure from the bottom of the case so it wouldnt matter. Just a thought. I still think you are missing something with the gauge as the bullet is not seated down near the primer where the gauge treads end could you post a picture as I have 2 of them reg and curved

I am not willing to half *** it at this point. The tool should have made accomodations. 120 gr bullets are standard for the Grendel. If its unstandard, then I'd be will to half *** it.

Im surprised to hear that. A year ago I contacted them by Email saying that I wanted to buy a new powder tube reservoir for my 15 year old Hornady powder dispenser and asked them if they still make it for my old model. My other one was badly discolored and was hard to see the powder level. It was due to leaving powder in it for a long time. They wrote me back two days later and asked for my mailing address. One week later a new one showed up at my door. Free and no questions asked. I thought that was great customer service. This action secured my bond with them and I now always buy there products when possible.....

I also have nothing but great customer service from Hornady! I did many noob mistakes when I first started reloading (Braoken pins, stuck cases, etc...). All replacements are shipped without having to send anything back. Maybe you can ask to speak with an supervisor?

Still no return call from the "custom division." Left another message today. How can they do business this way? I am very nice over the phone.

They still also have not checked their e-mail either. WTF?

Got tired of waiting so I called another technician. He told me to send it in and they will inspect and take care of it. This was after they dropped my call twice this morning. oh mannn.
