    30-40 Krag ammo

So I finally found some new factory ammo for my Krag. Its from Bitteroot Valley Ammo. I bought a box of the 150 gr soft points to try. Anyone have experience with this ammo and would they care to share their experience?

If you don't reload, it's pretty much your only option, at this point. It's not really "new factory" ammo. They don't manufacture their own brass. It's Winchester brass, IIRC.

Remington and WW have both stopped making Krag ammo new. You can still find it on the shelves at some gun shops but that's a long-shot. Midway says it's a "seasonal run" but I don't know what the "season" is, because it hasn't been Krag season for about 2 years now...

I've never had any trouble with the BVAC ammo. Pretty good stuff but I'd like to see a slightly better price. Like I said, though... Lack of options. Hopefully Prvi Partisan will start making it. I'll pay $15 a box for boxer primed shells any day...

Thanks for the info CED. I payed 20 bucks for 20 rounds of 150gr soft point. Thats better then the 35 bucks a box I've seen elsewhere. It definitely looks like reloading is in the future for me. I'm just jazzed I finally get to shoot my Krag that was made in 1902!

They're great rifles... I have two:

An 1898 and a "School gun", that has been blank adapted.

The one "I" have is actually my wifes. lol You see my father in law gave it to her along with a Chinese Makarov, a Star .380, an older Stevens mag fed bolt action 30-30 and an older 20ga mag fed bolt Mossberg. It seems that the Krag was one of those Benecia Arsenal jobs from the 30's that was cut down to carbine length. Its been her family since around that time. The action is buttery smooth....

            Yeah, they are.

Great caliber for CA hunting, too. Not much in this state that a 30-40 won't knock down. If you're going after Black Bear, or something, you might want to upgrade but it will take down most any CA deer with ease.

Shot it for the first time today... Wow, what a fun rifle! My wife was leary thinking the recoil would be like my Mosin. We were both very pleasantly suprised.

Uh oh... I think we have another "enthusiast".

Yeah, it's a great caliber. I love both of mine....

Just came across this thread. So how did this ammo work out for you? Were there any other options you considered? I’m looking to buy some.

There are no other options at the moment, unfortunately. Remington and Winchester both used to make loaded ammo for Krag but according to midway, its a "seasonal run" and it hasn't been "Krag Season" in about 2 years...

However, the BVAC stuff is fine, if you don't reload. I'd like to see a cheaper price but I'm sure it will go on sale.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try. It looks like I have to buy it from CTD.

You all really need to start reloading for the krag -- It is an easy case to reload and is pretty flexible -- 110 gr to 220 gr - Also not too fussy about powder.
A lee hand press, die set, scale and components will put you in business.
Fortunately I scored big on krag brass last year so my 7 krags will have enough fodder for my grandkids to use.
                        "civilise them with a Krag"

If you ever run low, you can also use .303 Brit brass and run it through the Krag dies. You may have to trim after re-sizing but the case dimensions are very similar to one another.
