CED, Pact, and Shooting Chrony are some of the more popular ones, I have a CED M2 that I'm happy with. I like how it keeps the shot strings and has a USB to attach to my computer and download the info later. It's still on it's original 9v battery that's over a year old.

Check MidwayUSA to see prices, read user reviews, and compare features to help you decide which is best. I don't like Cabela's shipping costs myself...

I would not buy a Shooting Chrony. They're junk IMO. I had one that missed over 10 percent of the shots and gave false reading when it did read them.

      CED makes a great product.

Oehler makes the best chrono's I've ever seen. They don't sell to regular people any more, just gun magazines and ammo manufacturers. If you can find a used one, jump on it. My Oehler is probably 25 years old and still works like the day it was made.

So IMO Oehler or CED. Skip the Chrony.

        Agreed ^^

Ohler is indeed best gear you can get.

CED and PACT are next best choice.

Pact plus point is that the electronics head is a shot timer too.

Chrony work OK IME, but in the long run are a BIC lighter type product and really are junk in comparison to the others.

The CED Millenium II is worth all 20,000 pennies it costs.

You really don't want to go cheap on some things, a chrono is one of them. Along with barrels, triggers, scopes and dies.

Buy once, cry once as the good people say.

I think the Chronys are great when there is a good light source; then get less reliable on cloudy days.

What he said +1 and to add CED has great software to download shooting data to your computer.

I bought a Chrony Beta Master and had problems from the first shot. I kept getting errors. Well I talked to the "tech guy" up in Canada for Shooting Chrony and he said to send it in and he'll take a look at it. Well after sending it back, I got a call a few days later from the tech and he said that he checked it and my unit was overly sensitive and that he'll replace all of the electronic components including the remote digital display/control box and test it. I got the unit back and there was a note stating that he tested it and all was good. I knew all of the parts were changed because I scribed hard to spot marks into the three electronic units he replaced and the marks were not on them anymore, so I knew he did not just B.S me and send my original stuff back. I have used it a half a dozen times since and it works great. The only time I get any problems is when one of the screens is in the sun and the other is in the shade. If both are in the sun or shade, no problems. I don't know what customer service the other companies give, but with the service I got with Shooting Chrony, I would buy their products again.

While I'll suggest an Oehler as well, I'm cheap and have a Chrony. As long as one knows how all chronographs work and what not to do, you should not get a 10% failure to read from any of them. However, imporper use of any of them can and will result in failures to read. I have friends with Oehlers and many of them have had problems getting reads.

The biggest thing I'd suggest is getting one with a remote reader and some memory. The cheapest Chronys don't come with these options. If you are going to use it at a public range, you'll be sorry if you don't have at least a remote display.

My CED will even audibly tell me the speed for each shot.
But, seriously, the memory and ease of downloading data is a huge to me.

Chrony F1 Master (the one with the remote display).

Chronys can be quirky, but once the kinks are known they are accurate and reliable.

Some things that'll save inconvenience and grief:

Don't test loads too early or too late in the day.
Remove the diffusers on cloudy days.

                          Substitute dowels for the rods.

Convert the F1 to an Alpha with a PVC sched 40 pipe, two end caps, a small push button
switch, a mini jack and a two conductor cable with mini plugs on each end. Plugging into the base jack enables all the Alpha's functions without buying an Alpha.

Mark the bullets with a black Sharpie. It enhances the contrast.

Don't shoot any closer than the full length of the cable.
Avoids errors from muzzle blast and black powder gak.

Don't shoot the sensor unit (duh!).

For best results be prepared to shoot at least 15 rounds through the instrument.
This avoids having to restart the string if a shot doesn't register and makes
                          the statistics functions more accurate.

Don't let anyone else "shoot a few through yer gizmo".
                          The reason should be obvious.

                          ===========||===========

Other brands may be better made, have more features and have more prestige,
but the Chrony will work if you give it a chance and understand the limitations
of what you're asking it to do. It is, after all, the Lee of the chronograph world.

                            Good suggestions mousegun.
Blackening the bullets with a sharpie makes them 100% reliable for me whenever I start getting erratic readings (usually at the end of the day). I also start a chrony session with my 22LR just to make sure everything is set up and working properly.

Bamboo shish kabob sticks are also a good cheap substitute for the sky screen metal rods. The reason for using a substitute is that if you shoot a metal rod, it will probably break the plastic mount on the sensor box. A wooden rod will simply shatter and not break the sensor. You can also use the sharpie to paint black bands on the wooden rods to line up where the "sweet spot" is above the sensor eyes.
