Head stamp question

A couple of months ago a buddy of mine game me a bunch of 308. Something in the order of 600 rounds or so of different stuff. I have some that I have no idea what they are. It is 308 for sure but the box says Venezuela and they were in battel packs. They are dated 1990 and the head stamp says cavim or something like that.

What can you tell me about this?

I think I remember looking at a few spent cases of this at the range. I didn't bring any home so it must've been Berdan primed. If it is, its probably not worth messing with.

I don't plan on running it threw my savage but I figured it would be cool for my m14.

Look down in the case and see if it has 2 flash holes. If it does, its Berdan primed and you need some special equipment to properly load it. DON'T try to decap it using your standard dies!

Well it is new ammo so I won't know till I shoot it. I'll keep that in mind when I look at the brass after it is fired.

I bought tons of this stuff....

Back in the mid 90's Cavim started showing up at gun shows. I had just bought myself an M1A. Cavim shoots pretty good. I think I bought about 4 cases of a thousand overall. It was going for 149.95 case. Now all mine was 1990 and 91 Manufacture and was all Boxer primed. It is heavy brass and you will need Small base dies to process. Years later they surpused Cavim 30.06 with a 1988 Mfg. This stuff was real good also. Now we reload, so no need to buy surplus. This is good plinking ammo. I don't know how it would do in a precision rifle.

you could always pull the bullet with some pliers and dump the powder (I burn mine :-D ) and then look for the flash holes.
