    5.45X39

I am new at this, looking into getting a AK-74, does the 5.45X39 ammo come only in metal shells? Looking at some of the on line, I seem to see only the metal shells and the ranges wont allow metal casings....

well actually brass is technically metal????? but i think what you mean to say is steel shells. 99% of 545 ammo i have seen is surplus ammo from russia. every range i have been to allows steel shells

Well brass it metal I assume you mean steel. You sure they don't allow steel casings but rather don't allow steel core ammo? There is no reason not to allow steel case ammo, most ranges have a magnet to separate the steel from the brass.

Ok, you guys are right on the metal, question is that I am looking into buying a AK-74, and the ammo casing is metal. I checked online with the Angeles Ranges ammo restrictions, and I am not sure if they allow the run of the mill ammo out there?? I am new at this so any advise would be welcomed.
        Thanks!

I just checked their website. I can see where you got confused but I was right. They only restrict steel core and steel jacketed ammo. There is no restriction on the casing. Call them just to confirm.

I will call them in the morning, but may sound like more trouble than it is worth.

A lot of people get confused with the term "bi-metal" jackets or bullets, meaning copper coated steel jacket.

I have heard of ranges that do not allow steel cased ammo on some thread in this forum in the past. That seems crazy, but it is because the range does not want to pick out the steel cased ammo when they sell your brass.

In the OP's case, I bet they mean steel core or steel jacketed bullet. The problem is that I don't think there is any 5.45x39 ammo out there that does not have a magnetic bullet.
The only exception may be the Hornady, but all the ads I've seen do not say whether it is magnetic or not. The Hornady ammo is expensive anyway. You're better off shooting the cheap russian stuff out in the desert.
