    12 Gauge 04 Buck Question

    Hello,

I do not have a "defensive" shot gun but only 28 inch barrel bird guns (several). These are not safe queens; they've been in the mud, duck blinds, fallen with me, and have their scars. I've been hunting with them for 30 years: 870, 1100 and a Weatherby pump.

If these guns were needed for home defense I know the bird shot would be fine close up, but we recently built a cabin in the wildnerness and spend more time them. Desert land, and I can't hit anything off my property with a shot gun I was thinking 04 buck would be better to have. Its expensive stuff with Federal/Remington/Winchester running 5 bucks for 5 rounds. Then I saw this stuff at Cabellas. 250 rounds for $155. Is it any good; will it be all right to use in my bird guns?

    Thanks for the advise.

PS...I have one of those $50 off cards from them on $500 purchases and was going to buy a bunch of ammo....shipping is a flat 19.95 for anything from them right now so I'd be getting this and some other stuff to use the $50 off card.

I found an article on shotgunworld.com that seems to apply to this situation:
Hello, I'm a shotgun novice and I'm looking for some help. I own an old hand-me-down J.Stevens 94A 16-Gauge, break, single-barrel shotgun. It has a 28" barrel, and I'm not sure how to identify what kind of 'choke' it has, but when I measure the barrel opening at the loading end, it measures...

It looks like you can shoot either the #4 or 00 buckshot through your guns. Still, I would be a bit wary about using buckshot through a full choke.

About the Cabelas order, use the code "2WFREE" for free shipping on orders over $150.
I don't know if you can use both coupons, but it's worth a try and this one gives you another option. I think that code expires 3/24/11.

#4 buck ought to be fine in any choke. 00 should probably be used with modified or looser choke to my understanding.

#4 Buck is very effective to about 25-30 yards. 00 will have good punch out to 50-60 yards. Beyond that slugs would be best stopping power. Modified or looser choke for slugs also.

        Thanks

Online it would not let me use the 50 card and the free shipping code, but they fixed shipping at 19.95. Considering the 10k in 22LR and this case for 19.95 on the order for $505; I feel good about my price point.

I was thinking about things after my post and realized....if I was actually shooting this stuff through one of the older guns I got bigger problems then worrying about the guns.

Has anyone ever tried this stuff? Being that its 40% less then the brand name stuff I always worry about getting what I pay for?

If it makes you feel any better, that is the brand that they sell at the Prado Olympic Shooting Park trap & skeet range. Most people bring their own, but I bet they do a pretty good amount of volume anyways.
