    Round counts

How much ammo do you have stored for each caliber?

    I have heard 1k rounds a few time.....seems a little high.

What do you have and why?

It depends on the guns. If you shoot them all the time, you look for deals and get what you can afford. I own military c&r guns and buy the ammo in spam cans, it will last forever. The time will come though when the surplus ammo will be hard to come buy and will become more costly. How much ammo you keep is a personal preference. For the 5 Mosins I have, 10,000 would be ideal, I don't have that much, wish I did. I shoot a lot of 7.62x25 so a few thousand would be great to have. I like shooting my 1911 but 45 ammo is kind of high, if I have 500 rounds of that I fell like Midas and his gold. Since 22 cal rifles and handguns are rather cheap and new cooler nice to shoot ones are coming out all the time, a thousand rounds is almost out. Like I said, what you feel comfortable with, what you can afford and have a safe secure place to store it.

I try to have a min of 500 per cartridge I shoot. If not in loaded at least in stuff to load that. I have more(much) in a number of cartridges I shoot. I have about 650 in 50bmg/30,000 in 22RF/2500 in 308win/2200+ in 223/1300+ in 7.62X54R/2500+ in 7.62X39/1000 in 8mm mauser/2000+ in 30-06 and many more with 500-1500 rounds. I also have a 5 shelf 4"X8" rack with just brass plus another with bullets and more brass.

I like to be prepared. I have to admit I got most of it before I stopped working and when they cost much less same with powder/primers.

6.5mm 300 (becuase it too expensive for 1k)
        30-06 500 (same as above)
.22lr 2k becuase it is so cheap and it can be used for so much
5.56 2k becuase it seems to appreciate in value faster than gold

I think the OP's question was more about "Why".

Because bulk pricing starts at 1000 rounds. If you shoot enough bulk pricing/reloading really matters, unless you are rich of course.

              .22lr - 6000
              .45 - 1000
              .40 - 800

When I finish my AR, I will probably get 2000 rounds.

Price break on buying ammo, and in case there happens to be any shortages. There have been times when I go to buy some ammo and don't have what I want, or are completely out. I hate looking for stuff, and I hate waiting for online orders.

I think pistols (centerfire) should have minimum 1k on hand.

Bolt rife, say 500 rounds. A semi-auto rifle should have 2k+ available per gun.

This is for loaded ammo (commercial or reloads). If you reload, I would suggest having components on hand to make up twice what is listed above per caliber at a minimum.

If we ever get into a SHTF situation that goes on for more than a few weeks, ammo and components for making ammo will become the new money (along with food, liquor, cigarettes and medical supplies, in this order). The chance of this coming to pass is close to winning the lottery, but there could come a time when ammo is gold

                JMHO, YMMV

It varies, because I shoot a lot.

I buy bulk .45 ACP boolits (2000 each) because I reload. And I usually reload around 800 to 1000 rounds at a pop. But it seems like I am always having to place a new bulk-buy order every few weeks.

For my carbine, it is the same, I usually reload 1000 at a pop. Just ordered another 3000 rounds of 55-grain FMJ.

For my shotgun, not as much. I usually have 200 or so rounds to play with. They go pretty fast. But then again, I do not shoot my shotgun as much as my carbine and pistol.

For home defense rounds, I have about 50 shotshells of 00-buck in a bandoleer hanging from my office door knob. And I have 6-shotshells in the 870P mag tube. For pistol, I have a full mag in the pisol, and two full mags right next to it. (Factory hollow points).

Forget the Zombies and Apocalypse. My goal is to ave 2,000 to 5,000 for every caliber I own. So when I retire and am on a fixed income I do not have to hear the wife explain we can't afford the ammo to go to the range. Not easy when I have 10 calibers to feed. But if the world should fall apart I will have that covered too.

You guys are crazy (kinda in a good away)

But at the same time I'm blown away. I also see why .45 and 10mm are so hard to get a hold of and suppliers keep raising prices.

Are we creating a false demand with our obsession to "be prepared"?

I'll admit I'm well on my way myself,......

900- 9mm (just ordered a conv. barrel to plink with 9mm (delivered today)
                      1000 -7.69x39 (don't even have rifle anymore)
                      100 - 12G

                      200 - 30/30
(and probaly about another 1k of this and that)

When does "computability" for "what if" cross the line of financial liability?
If we look at an average of $13 for 50rds, divide that by 2000 for each caliber we are what,....about $520.00 of ammo per Firearm?

Some of our firearms don't cost tat much! I estimated the approximate cost to purchase at current prices I have enough ammo to buy a car! Not to mention storage. Buying 72'' X 42''X 28 Safe does not even fit everything now.......

Thinking of buying a HiPoint rifle (caliber undecided) is not going to help me put my acquisitions on a diet either......

                      Is there help for us?

BTY, no.......... I'm not married or have kids........

BigBronco----I did what you have in mind. I bought when I had money and I figured the prices would just go up anyway. Now that I had to retire and got a divorce I am glad for the ammo since my income is small.

personally, i get worried why my count drops below 3K on each caliber..... I buy 22lr to stay consistant above 50K

A long time ago I used to think a couple of boxes of each caliber is good. And if I needed more I'd grab some on the way to the range.

Then I started thinking it would be easier to keep a couple hundred of each on hand.
But after I started shooting more often that gave way to a goal of 500 of each in storage.

That worked well enough for quite a while for me, but then we hit an ammo shortage. It wasn't as bad as the last one we experienced, but it was enough to make me change my goal to at least 1,000 per caliber.
Of course it became more than that number, because after 1,000 it's easy to keep grabbing what I find at decent prices. So in reality I normally had 2 to 3,000 of each caliber on hand at all times. If I went shooting, my job after cleaning all the guns was to replenish the inventory.

After this last ammo shortage I got into reloading and I also moved my inventory goal up to 10,000 rounds per caliber. And I have 18 different calibers to maintain now! :-/
I've achieved this new goal with about 6 of the calibers and the others are well on their way to that goal.

                            So what's next?????? 20,000? 40,000??? 100,000????
Basically what I'm saying is there's no such thing as "too much" when it comes to ammo or guns.
Especially if you shoot often! The family and I have spent 3 and 4 day weekends at our gun club and shot as many as 5,000 total rounds in those weekends. So 10,000 doesn't seem like that much in that perspective.

I shoot 200 rounds of centerfire per range trip, minimum. So 1000 rounds is not only not excessive, it's unacceptably low. I'd have to start rationing ammo if I had less than a month's shooting worth, and that's no fun.
