any store that charges $10 a box more will have a better supply. especially when that is a sale price.

why do you think walmart shelves are always empty?

I was merely pointing out some ammo ON THE SHELF that normally isn't around here that was priced decently.. especially the .45acp
guess you don't get out much and it is obvious you don't reload

          thanx for the tip

when their sale price has a 30% premium attached to it.... it's not worth it.

It's good that it's in stock though for those who are amazingly desperate.

For the cost of 2 boxes of .40 s&w from big5, I can buy carbide RCBS dies, hodgdon powder, some bullets and winchester primers enough to reload 200 cases. If I step down from the carbide, I can buy new cases too. This will also leave me with the Dies, and leftover powder.

Your math on the reload vs the sale priced ammo is not an apples to apples comparison. Your math considers the brass to be a use once item. The brass will be able to be reloaded and I will use 10 times for an example. So the $209.99 needs to be divided by 10 for a cost of $20.99. Also Extreme bullets sells their plated bullets for $116.00. So the total per reloaded 1k, using the cases at least 10 times comes to $231.89. If you cast your own the price goes down. Along with getting your brass from friends that don't reload and the price goes down even more. I buy my rifle brass from a shooter at the range I volunteer at for a really good price and another shooter at the range gives me his pistol brass, so for me the cost of brass is not really a factor. I use a brass catcher so I don't have to crawl around for my brass and my loss for pistol is maybe 2% and zero loss for rilfe brass.

So If I were reloading 40 S&W, my cost would be more like $210.89 per 1k. I'm not trying to stir the pot or get into a factory ammo vs reload debate. I enjoy reloading and the benefits are being able to shoot twice as much ammo for the cost of factory target loads. When you consider the price of larger rifle caliber ammo, the price is more than half the cost of factory target ammo and if you do some experimenting to find your rifles sweet spot you have match quality ammo for more than half the price of target ammo.

I did say that if you're desperate for off the shelf stuff, It's in stock so it's good for them. THEN I went off on the benefits of reloading.

                          I know it's for 100 rd packs.

that's why I said for the exhorbitant cost of 2 packs (80+tax), I can get going with reloading the same rounds.

                          200 sp primers @ 3.50/100 7.00 (Turners)
1lb Hodgdon powder 22.00 (bought locally, so no hazmat, no shipping)
                          200 hornadyXTP @ 20.00/100 40.00 (bass pro)
200 cases, used @ 10.00/100 20.00 (they even come with a plastic ammo box)
                          --------------------------------------
Grand total 89.00 +tax and about 6000 grains of powder left over.

OK so I exagerated a little bit earlier, when I was using bulk rates in my head. And I Can't get out of not being able to buy the dies to go with it (although if I already had the cases, I could get some used Lee dies for 12$...). These are just some off the shelf prices, it's too bad I couldn't find sale prices for these items. Probably come down some more.

Not everybody shoots 1,000 rounds a week. For the first 10 years that I owned a gun, it was rare if I got to a range more than once a month. Investing in reloading equipment to save $5 a month didn't make sense.
The Big 5 sale prices look like they're probably still cheaper than range prices. Most of us know that there is much cheaper ammo to be had, but a casual shooter could benefit.

Numbers and statistics can be made up to prove ANYTHING. 75% or 3 out of 4 people know that.
