Ok, I just picked up some 9mm bullets to load ranging from 115gr to 147gr. My question is what primers do you all like to use? I have Federal small pistol, CCI 500, Remington 1 1/2. Which do you guys prefer and why, or is there no real difference and should just load em up and shoot?

Small pistol primer for 9mm?

I usually use Winchester. I've never seen a real difference between any of the big names, I'm skeptical of the lower brands due to the possible inconsistencies of detonation. Just my opinion.R.I.P. Chris Kyle. 2/2/13Comment

I am pretty fond of CCI, they have been very consistant for me.Comment

I've used Federal and Wolf. No problems with either, but I find that Federal is much easier to prime in a majority of mixed brass because of its softer cup. There are lots of cost savings to be had by buying Wolf however.Comment

Federal & WW are what I use and they are pretty much interchangeable. Federal are a little softer cup material so they will go off reliably with a light strike if you have a wimpy striker spring.
CCI, Remington, Wolff, also all good choices.Comment

I've tried CCI, Federal, Fiocchi Lead-Free, Magtech, Remington, Winchester, and Wolf/Tula in .38/.357. They all go bang just fine. Using different brands of primers has not affected my accuracy even at 25 yards, but I'm not a Massad Ayoob-level shooter, either. :-)
You'll be fine with virtually any brand. This is one of the few instances where I've found that "cheaper is better".
EDIT: One other thing: Geoff Linder's point about Federal having softer cups is true. They also have a somewhat more volatile primer material (the so-called "basic" compound). So, if you have a lightened trigger/primer strike, Federals will go bang more easily, which is why a lot of the USPSA "race gun" competitors often prefer Federal primers. However, if your primer strike is stock, any brand will be just dandy.Last edited by Cowboy T; 03-10-2011, 7:42 PM."San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"

I use VV powders almost exclusively. I've used Winchester, CCI, and Federal primers in my 9mm loads (VV-N320). I can't tell a lick of difference in accuracy among different primers. I've gotten pretty damned good groups with all three brands of primers using VV powders.
Not saying your experience (that you got better groups with WSPs) is invalid, but I'd wager the accuracy difference you're seeing is not related to the primer brand.Last edited by Rotting; 03-10-2011, 9:49 PM.Comment

Winchester has been what Hornady and a few others have said to use for better velocity. I like to use the best components/loads so if I miss I have nothing to blame but my skill

I use Wolf, used a couple thousand Federals too. Just got 5K Tula this past week which are supposed to be the same as Wolf. Have not tried them yet.
I have had no problems using Wolf, but they seem a bit more difficult to seat that the Federals, but not by much.NRA Life Member
