    Trimming question

Trying to reload some 30-06 (Second time) I did not measure brass length the first time to see if it was to length and ended up cranking out 150 rounds only to have to pull them all

My question is since I am using the XL-650 is it alright to trim then re-size or must you re-size first and then trim & pull out station 1 (so it does not re-size again) or would it be ok to re-size again after trimming for convenience of not having to readjust station 1 the sizer.

    Thanks!

Trimming is ALWAYS done after re-sizing.

Re-sizing is the reason you need to trim in the first place. Pushing the shoulder back causes the case neck to grow longer because it pushes the stretched metal that way.

Thanks for clarifying. Another question if you can answer. This brass will be for a single gun. How do I only neck size rather than full length re-size? Im using dillons dies. / What is the principle behind using brass for a single gun.

      Thanks!

If you want to only neck size, you need to buy a neck size only die instead of using the full length die. Using brass for a single gun is because no two chambers are exactaly the same. When fired in one chamber, it will form itself to that exact shape/sized chamber. IF your brass is formed for one chamber that is on the bigger/longer side of things, it won't fit in a smaller chamber. Neck sizing will work for a couple of fireings, but at some point, the brass will expand to the point it wont fit anymore and have to be full length resized. Actually, not "full" length resized...if you are using that brass in just one chamber, you can back the die off untill it is just pushing the shoulder back a few thousanths so the case chambers. This will increase the life of the brass as you are woking it less.

Is this for a bolt or semi-auto? Bolt guns can be necked sized while semi-autos need to be re-sized ever time.
