44-40(44wcf) ammo

My buddy just came into a really nice older SA revolver in 44-40. He only had a few rounds with him so we didn't really get to shoot it much(he wanted to save some of the ammo for SD). I asked a guy at the range that was talking to us and he mentioned Cabela's has it in stock from time to time.. Sportsman's Warehouse doesn't carry it.

Does anyone know of a store that sells it(nor cal area: san jose up to sac, as he travels a lot) Or would he be better off buying on line.

I told him to reload and that is his plan eventually, but for now he just wants to be able to shoot the thing.

The gun bears no actual mfg logo. it just says 44-40 on the 4" barrel and has matching numbers(on barrel and bottom of handle) I was surprised at how little recoil/kick there was(my snubby 38 and full length 45 both kick WAY more). I might get a SA in the same caliber so we can both reload. i was originally leaning towards 45 Colt due to ammo availability, but now that my friend(whom i shoot with often) has this caliber i might jump on board too.

We are gonna go shooting again saturday. my buddy is in frisco and heading back to sac this afternoon. anybody that knows of a store that might carry it, please let me know. Reno is a bit out of the way for our time constraints.

loadxammo.com at Santa Rosa carries 44-40. Or, call Chabot Gun Club- last time I bought a 50rd box of 44-40 (cowboy ammo) about 4 yrs ago. 44-40 comes in from .427 to .430. Older model revolver usually takes .427 bullet. Modern day reproduction (Italian made- Uberti), both rifle and revolver, is usually .429 (same as 44-mag.)

You got to reload this ammo. Same for the 45 Colt because it's so expensive. The revolver might be an Italian made one from the 70s. I have seen some from that era that had no markings. If you want to turn heads on the firing line. The 44/40 is an excellent caliber for black powder.
