I am really enjoying reloading 45 ACP on my Lee classic loader. I was ordering my daughter an archery set and decided to order a Lee classic loader in 9mm. I plan on using Titegroup since I have it for my 45ACP. So I looked up the Titegroup load data and The 115 grain 9mm load data for LRN is only .5 grains less than the 230 grain 45ACP LRN. It seems like the 230grain bullet would take alot more powder than a 115grain bullet.

While it doesn't translate directly from one caliber and bullet to another, generally the heavier the bullet, the lighter the charge. When asked what qualities he most valued in his generals, Napoleon said, "give me lucky ones." -
You use less of the same powder for a heavier bullet (same caliber). This is because the bullet will accelerate slower due to the greater mass and the pressure max (pmax) will be higher. In other words, 4.5 grains of X powder may generate 30,000 PSI with a 115 grain bullet, but maybe 50,000 psi pmax for a 145grn bullet. Increasing the bullet weight will cause the pressure to rise because it harder to accelerate.
You use more powder for the same weight bullet, but bigger caliber. This is because with a bigger bore, the pressure drops faster as the bullet moves. Also there is more surface area on the bullet to get it moving.
So, the heavier bullet says you need less powder but the larger caliber says you need more. Thats kinda why 12g shotguns use fast burning pistol like powders instead of slow rifle powders. So I guess it magically works out to the same amount of powder for a 240grn 45 and 115grn 9mm.Last edited by xfer42; 03-02-2011, 9:55 PM.Comment

We use 3.9 grns Titegroup under 115 grn bullet up to 4.4 grns, both work well.
We are currently loading 3.9 grns under a 124 grn bullet and it works very well.
My only complaint is how dirty the power is, spent brass is nearly black on the top 1/3

I use 4.5gr TG pushing a 115gr plated bullet. Feels almost about as powerful as a factory load. Might be a bit under.Comment
