    Quiet .223 loadings

A 9mm running subsonic ammo in a 16" barrel is very quiet if loaded with fast powders.
A 300x221 running subsonic ammo is also very quiet.

No gun is truly "movie silent", even with a sound suppressor, but the right combination of bullet weight, fast powder and a long barrel will make them more than quiet enough to shoot in the house without the neighbors complaining.

I shoot Aguila's primer powered 17gr 22lr ammo from a 27" barreled bolt gun in the backyard.
It's about as loud as a spring-operated staple gun.

I have some of those 22's, wish I had a long barrel to try out and see how loud it actually is...

ive shot super colibri indoors out of a sig hammerli (one of those olympiad lookin handguns) into a .22 backstop further backed wtih mulch (so the safety freaks dont freak out).

              Super Colibri in rifle?

They warn not to use Super Colibri in a rifle because it might not make it all the way out the barrel. Is that just lawyerese, or is it a real hazard? I've been shooting ground squirrels around my house with CB Long, not to avoid the neighbors hearing it (closest are a quarter mile away) but to not spook the rest of the critters. It works pretty well that way, but even quieter would be even better.

They do stop in the barrel sometimes so it's a legitimate warning.
I have stuck as many as four of them in the barrel at once.
Each successive shot gets louder and louder out of the action.
The pullets push out really easy with a cleaning rod.
No barrel ringing was caused due to the low velocity and extremely low pressures involved.

I would not leave one in there and then fire a regular round.
THAT would be a serious problem.

                  lol...

Now.... what if... someone load only 1/3 the regular required powder in a 223?

eg. instead of 25gr of powder, just put 10gr?

It should still BANG... and push the bullet out... and... what would be the MV like?

The Gov't spends a few dollars trying to get a subsonic 5.56 round that is lethal and still cycles the action on a AR style rifle........I've seen a few but can't really buy a lot of them or any of them....

COLIBRE works just fine out of Cricket rifles....never got one stuck, yet...

The Hunting Shack make a "subsonic" 308.... that seems a quite interesting...

A subsonic .223 bullet is almost identical to a 60 grain Aguillla SSS .22LR in terms of acoustic properties and because of the heavy bullet it actually works well in 1/9 twist barrels.

Get a .22LR conversion kit, then run the factory loads (they're cheap)

and voilla, you have a massively overbuilt bolt action .22LR that is awkward to cock but is nice and quiet.

If you want a harder hitting subsonic round, you really need to use a heavier bullet, when you have a maximum velocity ceiling (that IS what subsonic means) the only way to increase kinetic energy transfer is to put a bigger piece of lead out the barrel.
