For those familiar with checking the headspace on an AR15 I need a little help.
I have a new Colt upper that came without a bolt carrier group so I've got to purchase one. A lot of people say that if you have a new barrel and new bolt carrier group that you don't need to check headspace, that everything is already set and checked at the factory. I on the other hand would rather spend the $30 and enjoy the piece of mind knowing that everything is within spec and not destined to blow my face or hand off.
The general consensus is that when checking headspace you only really need the field gauge, and not the go or no-go gauges. Is this true?
In addition, people have cited a difference between "commercial" field gauges and "military" field gauges so my questions are:
1. Do I only need the field gauge to check headspace? or do I also need the go and no-go gauges?
2. Do I want the commercial .223 gauges? or the military 5.56 gauges?
3. Do you know if the gauges offered by Bushmaster are the commercial .223 version? or are they the military 5.56 version?
4. When using the field gauge do I have to completely strip the bolt? or do I just slip the gauge into the chamber and gently (with my hand) try and slide the bolt closed?
A lot of questions I know, but I can't seem to find the answers anywhere.
Thanks
