Setting Lee seating die to crimp 45ACP

I've read that the Lee bullet seating die can be set to give a taper crimp. Does anyone have any tips on how to set this up?

Just like setting any other seated die to crimp; seat bullet to desired depth, back off seater plug, screw in die until you get the crimp you want, screw in seater plug to touch the bullet.

Most die makers have instructions for their dies on their web sites. Lee does.

Here's a link to the instructional video in case you need it.

Thanks. The hieroglyphics in Lee's manual weren't cutting it.

Some folks prefer to make two operations out the prooceedure.

First seat your batch of bullets to depth you want.

Second, back off seating screw and lower die for crimping the batch.

I prefer this, especially with cast bullets and a heavy crimp.

Taper crimped rimless pistol rounds are the only time I don't do it the way gunboat describes, but not for any reason other than it being a less critical crimp situation.

basically i set up the die like this

i unscrew the seating plug pretty far out

then put a factory cartridge in the shellholder like say a winchester white box or a federal 230 fmj raise ram to full up dial down the die till i feel resistance then dial the seating plug down till it too meets with resistance

its probably cheating but it works for me

.45 ACP, I wouldn't crimp at all. I'd adjust the die only enough to straighten out the case and get rid of the flare. That's all I ever did for 9mm Para and this worked out very well.

I prefer a light taper crimp on my 45 acp. Approximately .469-.470" at the case mouth.
