Medium plus ? to polish your brass

It looks like either walnuts or corn cobs are the best medium to use to clean your brass. But what do you use to polish your brass? In the other thread someone mentioned using Dillion's Rapid Polish, Nu Finish and a chrome polish.

What do you use to polish your brass?

Next question is how much do you use for lets say a pound of walnuts or corn cobs?

A cap of Nufinish in the tumbler is all you need. Corn cob will polish the brass without any additives, but the nufinish helps.

More importantly than anything though, are dryer sheets. Cut up a dryer sheet use it in every batch of brass that you tumble. It will make the media last ten times as long and will make your brass smell good too.

For intial cleaning, I use walnut media with a tablespoon or two of mineral spirits and a cap or two of NuFinish. After sizing, I use corn cob with a couple caps of Dillon's Rapid Polish to get the shine I want.

In addition to helping the cleaning, NuFinish also slows the eventual oxidization of the brass, so it stays shiny longer. (Just my belief based on direct observation.)

Being a very passionate precision shooter and reloader I am always searching for the BEST products available to eliminate all the variables possible to achieve to upmost accuracy and consistency. Being the current IBS 1000 Yard Light Gun World Record Holder for Group and Score I know first hand what it takes to achieve the accuracy necessary to produce tiny little groups and shot placement at long range. With the help of your products I'm sure lots of long range shooters out there would be more than satisfied with the results of STM and the Thumler's Tumbler cleaning system, I know I am. My search for the absolute best brass cleaning method is over, thanks to STM."

For $50 it better work well. Drying the brass may suck but it may be worth it.

How does the above compare to this: (cleaner) :
(skip to 1:35 for the cleaner)

                  <Hornady Ad here>
I've seen the hornady sonic cleaners in a different video, and they LOOK awesome, but i've not met a person who can verify it, nor have I met someone willing to shell out the money for one.

The video shows their "magnum" version that's rather large. They make a normal one for personal use as well.

I think it re-uses the same fluid, you just pour it off back into the bottle and strain out the debris, which increases the lifetime of the solution.

Using it to clean non-brass items is the best part about, and that's where the real added value comes from.

I have the 'personal' sized cleaner - Gem-Oro makes it for Hornady. My wife especially likes it to clean her jewelry too. I have also used it to clean gun parts.

I am thinking about the larger sized cleaner from Hornady that is allegedly manufactured by a Chinese OEM; (I've seen the web-site) but the stainless steel stuff has me a bit curious as well. I have one of those rock tumblers around here some where - I am going to try that out too I think.

I use cheap corncob media that I bought at Grainger's, with a little red jeweler's rouge added. Just enough to sort of turn it pink.

I prefer a tumbler over a vibratory cleaner. I have purchased a small cement mixer from Harbor Freight for under $150. It will clean up to 2000 pcs of brass at once, though I seldom polish more than 200.

For media, I buy crushed walnut hulls sold as lizard bedding at PetSmart. It is very economical compared to anything that has "reloading" on the package and is the same material. I add a couple of tablespoons of mineral spirits and about 2 caps of Brasso to the media in the tumbler each time I polish brass. About an hour in the tumbler and even the dirtiest brass is clean as a whistle.

I have heard that Brasso has ammonia in it and that is not really good for brass as it makes it brittle, which would create cracks easier when flaring for the bullet insertion. Nu-Finish works very well, especially when mixed with mineral spirits.

I also looked into using stainless steel in a vibratory unit and was told by the Lyman tech that they do not recommend using stainless in their machines. They actually said that their machines are not made for stainless and see no need to use anything but media.

I tried the ceramic ball media as well, it uses the 'wet' method with soap. Not as good as the standard walnut or corncob media and a lot more work rinsing and drying. I still have a bag of that stuff if anyone is interested in giving it a go.

The stainless media is only for use in a rotary tumbler, like a Thumler's Tumbler.
