    What might have caused this?

I picked this up at the range. It's a LC .223 case. What I'm wondering about is, why is it concave around the edge of the primer pocket? At first I thought someone might have enlarged it to fit a large rifle primer, but the diameter is still the size of a SR primer.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks.

The military crimp was removed, plus a lot of additional brass.

the previous person reamed the hell out of it with what looks like a counter sink

cause they were sick of *****footing with a little pocket cleaner and having their primers crushed from the remaining crimp

You can ream the hell out of the pockets with the Dillon swager, too.

That's why the RCBS case prep station has an adjustable depth on the crimp cutter heads - but I prefer the swager they sell, why remove brass if you don't have to?

Looks like the guy was countersinking for a screw he forgot to put through the flash hole.

Crimp removed using a Chamfer and Deburring Tool. I've done it. It works. It is hard to tell from the image how much primer pocket was lost, but perhaps stop using the Makita.

A little late, but definately reamed with a counter sink. I do the same, just not as deep.

Wow, that first pic was way more than needed! I personally don't bother with this type of brass.
