60gr V-Max

I just bought a Remington VSSF in 22-250 with a factory 26" 1:14 barrel to use for ground squirrels. Can I stabilize a 60gr V-Max or am I limited to 50-55gr bullets? What powders would you recommend? I have a good supply of Varget and RL15 on hand but don't mind picking up other powders.

What does your load book say?

The barrel length doesn't stabilize the bullet, the bullet's angular velocity does. The 1:8, 1:7 numbers that get bandied about for .223 are totally different because the muzzle velocity of your 22-250 is going to be higher with a correspondingly proportional increase in rpm.

I have load books for Nosler, Speer and Barnes but don't have any Hornady data.

per hornady reload manual, for 22-250 coal 2.350 either varget or rl-15 will work for 60gr v-max:
varget start 29.5 max 34.1
rl-15 start 30.4, max 34.9


however there's a note that says 60 gr v-max will not stabilize in 1 in 14 barrels

Thanks! I'll order a box of 52gr A-Max and 55gr V-Max. With Winchester using a 1:10 and Savage using a 1:12, I can't understand why Remington hasn't shifted to a faster twist on their 22-250 varmint rifles.

You might also try Sierra's 50 and 55gr Blitzking bullets. They kept the 1/14 given the high velocities most varminters like to run.
