My question is why did you not just buy mag small pistol primers to start with. You can use them in all loads and not have to restrict your powder choices. They provide more accurate loads also as tests in handloader mag showed for different bullet weights and barrel lenghts.

Then again if they were priced right..........I might be tempted also.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

"you WILL get pierced and flattened primers" . A bit strong, you MAY get these results.
I do agree that it is not generally good form to interchange pistol and rifle primers. Some cartridges are used in both pistol and revolver and generally can use either primer -- 32/20, and 44/40 come to mind.

He did say "obtained", not bought.
Maybe they were given to him by a very good friend?

Depends on the load & powder.

Dunno about the others but I have yet to see a .357 load using 2400 powder that calls for a magnum primer. So there's that option...

...or I could take a few thousand of those primers off yer hands.
