M885 or 7.62 Nato ball?

Which penetrates better? I heard there is a new M885, that outperforms the 7.62, the M885A1 (?), but how about the old M885 and 7.62 Nato? Which penetrates better?

7.62 has more energy and will always out perform a 223. The exception is in recoil.

The new M855A1 round is supposed to outperform the current 7.62mm ball ammunition against certain types of targets.
