Question on McMillan M3A stock and referral to Bay Area Gunsmith for M1A/Garand work

I have an M1A with the McMillan M3A stock (I am not the original owner) and have found that the stock is a bit short for me. I'd like to add some length to the buttpad area and I saw that McMillan has a spacer/extension add-on available, but when I talked to the McMillan rep they said that it needs to either be installed by McMillan (which means shipping my rifle to them, which I hesitate to do) or installed by a gunsmith, as the spacer kit need to have some metal work done to finish it for the particular rifle.

If anyone has any experience with this aspect of the M3A stock I'd like to hear whether it is possible to do this work without a gunsmith. Otherwise, if anyone has a recommendation for a gunsmith who is experienced in M1A work in the San Francisco Bay Area I'd appreciate a referral. I also have a Garand that I'd like to have a gunsmith do some general maintenance work on, so if there is anyone in the Bay Area who does work on M1As and Garands I would really like to hear about him.

Richard Hudnut at Santa Clara (408-988-8608) rebarrelled my Garand. He specializes in M1.

Can you just send the stock to McMillan or are they asking for the whole rifle?

I think you're better off sending the whole rifle to McMillan. They can rebed the action for you after they finish the stock work.

The only problem with doing that is you may or may not get the stock/rifle back this year.

For a number of reasons I would prefer to not send the rifle to McMillans (and the action was recently bedded into the stock by GA Precision, so I would rather not break it apart at this point), so I am going to try to go local. Thanks for the suggestion on Richard Hudnut.

Order the parts from McMillan and PM me. Your Garand is not a problem either.

Sounds like it needs to be bedded.

Tom Luhmann is down in Clovis. He's usually got a very shot turn around time. He's done a lot of M14 work for those of us that shoot that rifle in competition. Use the search button to get a phone number.

You may find long lines everywhere this time of year (Camp Perry's in three weeks).
