Couple of issues, need some advice!

Hey Guys,

A couple of things:

1st - I am loading .40SW for the first time. In the sierra manual it shows starting load at 4.8g of Bullsey and a max of 5.4g of bullseye for 165g jacketed rounds.. Here is the problem. The manual says the OAL should be 1.120. That is too long for my glock mags. I had to cut the OAL down to 1.135 to fit into the mag. With this i loaded 50 rounds at the minimum starting charge, as I know the shorter OAL should increase case pressure. Is this dangerous? Or did I take the right approach, and fire a few, then check for pressure signs?


2 - On my Dillon XL650 I run into this problem. It was happinging about 1 out of 20-40 rounds with large primers, and with smaller primers its happend 4 rounds at of 50. The primers get jammed in sideways. Is this normal?

did you change the primer ring to small primer set up? you should be able to see the primers when they index to the next station. to see if they are all laying flat with in the ring. about your overall length try referencing different manuals to check oal. i just finished a load of .40 using bluedot,powerpistol and 231. i get different charge amounts according to different manuals. i load 155gr. with the oal of 1.125" this should fit the mag of the glock. just cycle them throw your glock to see if everything chambers well

Are you sure you are taking your measurements correctly? You say you cut down your OAL, but 1.135 is longer than 1.120

As for the primer issue, I've heard of that happening before, I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out.

Holy sweet jesus im a dumbass......for some reason (maybe dislexia who knows) i kept reading it as 1.200 OAL.... oh man im feelin real dumb... Time to run them back through the seat/crimp die.



Anyways as for the second problem, its not a huge issue. But yes I am using the small primer and ill check the primers to see if they are flat during indexing.

Sounds like you're not running the press smoothly. Flipping a small primer is normal, once in a great while because they're "square", same diameter as height. Try a little spray lube on the cases before sizing and see if it helps smooth things out.

Good advice, ill test that out.

I fixed the OAL problem, now i have rounds that are loaded for minium charge wieght with good OAL

Im still feeling real real dumb though. I went back and checked the batch of .45ACp I did and those were perfect.

I'm not certain about the 650, but on a SDB there is an adjustment screw that can adjust how close the primer cup is to the primer feed tube. If there is too much of a gap, it gives the primer a chance to drop into the cup crooked.

Sometimes the primer feed tube has a bent or miss-formed plastic end which will give the results you are experiencing.

Also, if the timing is slightly off with the indexing arm and the 'window' in which the primer is seated, that can cause your issues as well. They simply don't align exactly.

Give Dillon a call, they are the experts.

On the XL-650 you do not see any primers.

NO.......
Take the primer assembly apart clean and lube it according to Dillon's instructions that can be found in the XL-650 manual. Make sure that your reloading bench is bolted to mother earth and the surround walls, since the 650 hate bench movement.
