Wolf ammo question

Hello to all,

Today I went to Angeles to get some rounds downrange on my AK and brought some Wolf ammo with me. The range master told me I can't shoot this ammo at there range so I pulled out some other ammo that they did accept.

Odd thing is that when I went in the store to pay I noticed they were selling Wolf ammo that appeared to be rifle ammo.

Question.... Wolf ammo all the same manufacturing wise or depending on the caliber/rifle/pistol ammo do they make the actual bullet different from one another?????

I mean they don't allow steel ammo to be shot at there range but then again they sell it off their shelf???? What gives?????

Is this an honest mistake on the range master or is this corporate bull????

Wolf makes no ammo themselves, "they are a clearinghouse for former Soviet ammo factories" (Wikipedia), the Black Box ammo is steel jacket and/or steel core and all the ranges around here won't allow it. Wolf Gold is non-magnetic, made by Prvi Partizan and should be good to go, it's probably what you saw.

Doesn't Burro allow magnetic during winter months?

Maybe I am wrong on what I saw BUT my ammo was Wolf in the typical black box and the ammo they sold off the shelve was in a black box too. I wonder. If it is steel core then OK I'm fine with that as it;s their range. I'm just venting.

So far I was shooting Remington/UMC ammo and it operated fine but this ammo shoots to the right just off the black. I wanted to try and use Wolf to see how it groups and perhaps I can get it sighted to a particular brand of ammo. If Burro allows Wold then I may have to go there and shoot but they have no formal benches to sit and shoot from a stable platform.

Burro has shooting benches to shoot from. The seats suck but you could find some solid benches to shoot from. Dont know if they let you shoot magnetic ammo though!

OK then guys/gals what other brands of ammo that is available in brass casings and non corrosive that Angeles will allow????? I can't find any PMC nor does I think CCI makes a cheaper round that uses the aluminum cases.

Am I just stuck going to Bass Pro and using Remington/UMC???

Walmart usually has some 762x39, but it aint cheap. I think it's Winchester and over .50 a round.

are they selling the black/yellow box version?
that's the copper jacket(nonmagnetic) version.
I got some from Turners a while back @ ~$5/box.

try the Yugo M67's, they are nonmagnetic.
AIMs has it for $200/1260.

That's very interesting, the first (and last) time I went to Angeles, I caught one of the employees searching my bag, thinking I wasn't looking, and actually took a box of Black Box ammo out of my bag, and told me I couldn't shoot it and to pick it up on the way out.

The only Wolf ammo in x54R that is non-magnetic is Gold. Not sure about x39.

Anyone from ASR care to chime in regarding ammo policy?

And no, I didn't try and sneak in the ammo, didn't know it was not allowed, and he could have asked me first before looking in my bag while my back was turned. But that's another story...

Wolf ammo I do know the shell casing is steel but I thought that all bullets used by Wolf was made of lead core and a copper coating was added. I've used Wolf at San Gabriel Valley when they were in business and never got hassled at all. So if and when they use a magnet to check it how do they know everything is made from steel???? All I wanted to do is get my rifle sighted in at the 50 yard mark. I only brought 60 rounds?

Oh well too late now. I had to burn my expensive Remington/UMC ammo to get by.

Wolf ammo had an issue with fragmenting and causing issues with nearby shooters in other lanes a few years ago.I think that was what caused the ban. Plus the range guys don't get to profit from reloading steel case ammo rather than the"once fired brass" so that I think is the real reason for banning the use of Wolf ammo

OK that's understandable but it really doesn't explain why they won't allow Wolf ammo to be shot and yet they sell Wolf for consumption. OK then it would be nice if Wolf would just standardize they're ammo si it can be shot in California. By the same token if CCI would produce they're aluminum cased ammo cuz that's a little cheaper in cost for the consumer.

Lots of ranges don't allow wolf (or Tula, it's the same stuff) ammo for a few reasons. It has a bi-metal jacket with steel in it so it could spark on a steel target. Also, some ranges don't want to hassle with separating steel casing from brass.

FWIW both ranges here in SLO allow Wolf all the time.
