    22lr different grains

    Hi all,

an indoor gun range just opened up near me and since i plan on shooting more often i want to buy some bulk ammo for my 1022 rifle. it occurred to me i don't really know much about the different velocities and weights of 22lr ammunition. does it really matter for plinking and target shooting?

    Thanks!

Well, they will all shoot a little different from each other. Some will be more accurate or more reliable than others in your particular rifle. Get a variety of different manufacturers and see what works best for you.

Don't worry too much about the weight of bullets, for what you are doing it really won't matter. "Bulk" ammo is sold to meet a certain price point, the factories reduce costs by using one big box instead of 10 little ones. Reducing the weight of the bullet also is a cost saving measure.

40gr is the "standard" bullet weight, but weights will be found in the 36-40gr range also, especially with bulk ammo. 32gr are found on hyper-velocity rounds, less weight helps achieve velocity.

Velocity will usually be found in four categories, match, standard, high velocity and hyper-velocity. Most shooters use high velocity for general use, competition shooters use match grade ammo, shooters of older guns use standard velocity and self defense users use the hyper-velocity. Hunters tend to use all four categories.

I misspoke when I said bulk, I just meant large quantity. I've found the rifle likes CCI ammo. I've used their 36grain high-velocity, and their 32grain hypervelocity. I'm thinking now it really doesn't matter at the range?

No, it should not matter unless your guns needs the extra bolt thrust to operate properly. The slower velocities will be easier on your firearms also.

The only .22lr I buy is CCI blazer, $15ish for a brick and it shoots great.

Up and running for a few months now, its the only indoor range in the Coachella Valley (they're in Palm Desert).

I took the NRA Basic Pistol class there, and everyone seems pretty knowledgeable and friendly. I've had my rifle for many years, and now I hope to get into handguns (once i finish paying for unexpected car repairs).

btw, you can get seebee caps (for shooting in your office) they are 11.99/50 @ melcottons, or for .40/rd .22lr tracers
