Savage 10fp and OAL

Anyone with a Savage 10fp and reloading, does this sound right?

I used the Hornady OAL gauge and a 175 grain SMK and from the point the bullet is grabbed by the rifling (I think) and sticks is 2.835. Does this sound right? The first 10 I loaded I did at 2.84 with 168g SMKs and didn't seem to have any issues such as pressure signs. I was loading a slow load that should have been good for 2400fps. I am guessing since the bullet was touching I should load to an OAL of 2.83 or so.

Also what should I look to push the 175g at to get good 1000 yard performance?

You need to use a bullet comparator to be more precise. The tip of the bullet doesn't make contact with anything in the barrel. It's the secant/ogive of the bullet that does. You want to use a comparator when comparing seating depths.

Anyway, if you are using the Hornady OAL tool and it's coming out to 2.835 on average, then that's probably correct.

You need to get a muzzle velocity of at least 2650 to maintain supersonic flight to 1000 yards with the 175. 2700-2750 is probably the sweet spot.
