.308 ammo test

Had a new barrel screwed on the other day. Took it out and tested six different loads. Nothing spectacular, but not bad either. The best group was .320" and the worst was .730". Will have to do this test again after a few hundred rounds of settling in.

This barrel seems to be stringing horizontally. It was not windy while shooting, so am not sure what that is about. The diagonal groups are bad and the bottom right one is even worse as it is stacked like a snowman. I need to get away from that velocity range, by backing off or adding more powder.

I will shoot the 47.25 grain load at the 1000 yard line for a few weeks and see how it works out. The last barrel on this rifle preferred that load too. Although this chamber is .030" shorter and about .001" smaller in diameter near the web, the velocity is about the same.

Those are some good groups. What position are you shooting from? Any support? 100yd or 200yd?

Lastly, how's the range at Linden? I was gonna head out there tday but just figured it was gonna be a mud pit.

Unless the barrel is custom with a hand lap job, I dont grade any groups until the barrel is seasoned with a proper break in. If your groups were shot at 100yrs +, your doing good. Nice shooting......

Actually, I mis-spoke. The throat is .030" shorter than in my normal chamber, so the bullet has about .125" of the bearing surface in the case neck. That puts the base of the bullet near the bottom of the neck. They were concerned that the bullets may move when we ship our ammo internationally, so they shortened things a bit.

It is a 1:13 twist Krieger, .3065"/.298". I test off a bench with a scope at 100 yards, but compete prone with a sling and iron sights from 300-1,000 yards. I loaded up 47.25 grains and shot 800, 900 and 1,000 yards today. We only had on 3+- minutes of windage, but it hammered the x-ring (10 inches) at the 1,000 pretty well. It looks like it might shoot ok.

Everyone on the Team is required to use the Fullbore 2011 reamer in a 30" Krieger 1:13, .3065". And we will all be shooting the Sierra 2156. They are trying to standardize things as much as possible.

I got my Palma barrel chambered using the 2011 reamer as well. I initially thought the throat was a bit on the long side, but went back to this thread and it matches up to what you measured.

I fired this gun yesterday with a bipod and scope in the Palma match, for a 443-25X. The national record is a 444-14X. So, over half of the shots were inside of 1/2 MOA, at 800-1,000 yards. It seems that the barrel is shooting fairly well. Too bad it will have to come off this Summer and a fresh one installed for the Long-Range World Championships in October.
