Seeking advice, please; want to get started . . .

    Hi, Calgunners,

I'd like to start rolling my own .38's & .45's, possibly .308's later on. Not for any other reason than saving $; so, with that in mind, I would appreciate input re: a basic, inexpensive set-up to get me going. Budget is prime consideration. Not planning more than a combined total of maybe 50-75 rounds/week.

What is your average/typical cost per round for above calibers? For practice, probably light, slow ball ammo for reduced felt recoil from 3-4" barrels. Be honest here, please; I promise not to tell your wife :-)

I thank you in advance &

Start looking at MidwayUSA for the Lee Turret presses. You can get a 3 or 4 hole turret press for about $100. The dies are about $25 each caliber. The powder meter is about $25. See the sticky in this category for a rundown of the other accessories you'll need like a scale, bullet puller, etc.

$68 - Lee 3 Hole Turret Press with Manual Index

Get the Lyman reloading manual and read it. Then order a single stage reloading KIT to get started. If you are too lazy or so mechanicely chalanged you cannot take about 30 sec to change dies then get a turret press.

"I" would suggest an RCBS or Hornady kit and if you are or want cheap stuff get a lee kit. Get RCBS/Hornady/Lyman/Redding dies or if you get lee dies buy some real lock rings so after they are adjusted correctly you will not have to readjust the die body again.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

That's the worst thing with the lee dies the rings don't lock.
no one thinks single stage presses are fast enough these days it seems.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.
