    OAL variations question

Hey everyone, i wanted to see if slight variations in OAL is a problem or not. Im reloading .45acp and i am getting between 1.225 - 1.230 for the round's OAL without touching anything. Is this much variation cause for concern, or is it normal? Im on the low end of the pressure scale if it matters.

    Thanks.

The seater plug can get crap inside the cupped portion. Usually lube or lead from cast bullets.

That range of variation or even a little more is typical with Jacketed Hollow Point bullets. It's also probably in the range of normal if you are using cast lead bullets. For FMJ I would think 5 thousandths is a tad much, but again, .45 ACP is not a picky cartridge and it may not be an issue in usage.

Also, I have seen this type of thing happen on progressive presses where you are using mixed lot brass. The size die exerts variable force on the shell plate depending on the case in the die and this translates to a little shell plate rocking and it will effect the seating die a tad as it's on the opposite side of the shell plate.

I will check the die to see if lead has built up in it.

Geoff - Im using lead projectiles. And you nailed my setup, a progressive press with mixed brass. There is a good amount of variation in handle pressure, and the shell plate flexing/rocking a little bit does sound reasonable.

Would you guys say its something i should just live with but keep my eye on if it is not something that can be fixed?

With cast lead and mixed lot brass I would say you are good to go here. With lead bullets do make sure to clean the seater dies regularly.

I would think with mixed brass it is acceptable. Shoot, for my purposes, it would be acceptable with sorted brass. Since you are on the low end of pressure, I would think it is fine.
