    Wilson Trimmer advice?

About to purchase a wilson trimmer. I'm confused by all the options available for the wilson/sinclair trimmers. I'll be reloading in low amounts for a garand, k31, and m1a. Any advice to share on which specific wilson/sinclair to get?

There really is only one Wilson trimmer and this is the one.

The basic trimmer only needs the right case holder and cutter for the caliber you are trimming.

Only options I am aware of are additional cutter heads for doing primer pocket crimp removal, case mouth reaming or de-burring.

If you don't want to go whole hawg and get a Gracey or Giraud power trimmer, then this specific trimmer tool is one of the better ways to get the same level of precision, albeit, a lot slower than with a Gracey or Giraud

If you are just getting started trimming, all you need is a decent caliper to measure the finished product. Don't bother with the micrometer version or the accessory micrometer head for now.

I would also suggest just using the trimmer clamped in a vise to start and wait on a dedicated stand for it until you get used to it.

Get the basic trimmer with the right case holder and cutter for your caliber and learn to use it and see if you like it before buying more stuff for it.

If you will ultimately be trimming a large amount of cases of one specific caliber, you may find it better to step up to a power trimmer (no, the power screwdriver adapter for this trimmer is NOT the same as a real power trimmer).

I can trim over 200 cases per hour using the Wilson. Can the Possum Hollow trim faster?

I have the Wilson in a Sinclair stand mounted to a 2x4. The trimmer is very consistent.

The Wilson is the best hand crank collet style trimmer there is IMHO. But nothing beats a power trimmer for ease and speed. Plus, the Gracey and Giraud chamfer at the same time so no additional step is needed to clean up the trim cut.

The thing the Possum Hollow trimmer does correctly compared to the Wilson (or any collet trimmer for that matter) is index on the case shoulder like a cartride sits in a rifle chamber. This is a desirable way to trim because it's shoulder forward that matters. Shoulder back is only headspace clearance for chambering purposes.

A case trimmer that indexes on case base may be accurate and repeatable, but base to mouth distance and parallelity are not the most important things in accuracy. Datum line on shoulder to case mouth distance and concentricity of bore to case neck is what matters for consistent ammo results downrange. The Gracey and Giraud also index on case shoulder like the Possum Hollow trimmer and the case mouth is then cut parallel to the datum line, not case head to case mouth being cut to parallel like a collet trimmer does. There is a small difference here to be aware of

+1 on GeoffLinder"s very informative posts. Get a case gage to set your headspace when you resize. I suggest Wilson's since you can place a fired case from your rifle and know where the shoulder sits. Then you can use the Possum Hollow with a drill adapter to quickly trim the cases.

hmm maybe I'll give possum hollow a try. They're only ~$20.

Cheapest way to get started will be the possum hollow trimmer

Can't go wrong at that price point :-)
