    Question about powder throws

Hi all. I'm loading 45acp tonite. The problem is the powder dispenser (Hornady). It doesn't seem to be very consistant. Some throws come out at 4.8 gr. and some at 5.1 gr. I'm using Titegroup powder and want a 5.0 gr load.Does + or - .1 or .2 gr. make that much of a difference? Not looking for ultra accuracy, just like for things to run smoothly. Are any tips out there for this type dispenser?

If you mean .1 or .2 grains then you should be safe, if you are over or under 1 or 2 whole grains as you stated you need to stop immediately until you figure out what's wrong with your powder measure.

Yea I guess the decimal point makes a difference. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the reply.

Two questions. Is it new and your using it for the first time? If so, did you degrease all the parts and inside the body before using it? This is a mistake that many reloaders have by not removing all the anti corrosion oil from them....

Up and down a tenth or two isnt going to be no problem for pistol ammo....

With any powder thrower the whole key is consistency. You have to learn to operate the lever the same way every time. Operate the lever at the same speed and hit the stops (up and down) the same way. Listen for how hard that you hit the stops and measure by "ear". If you run the measure consistently it's a lot easier to stay within 0.1 grains.

Yes mine does that too. It bothers me enough that I'm getting a beam scale and a more reliable digi scale.

Thats the way i do mine i have a routine and stick to it 2 taps then drop2 more taps then return to top and repeat.

if i just throw a charge it can vary i also find that some powders are way more consistent than others.Mainly when it comes to rifle powders

I have this same problem with unique powder thru a lee powder measure. The shape of the powder seems to make as much difference as the throw consistency.

I use the red press as well. My charges jump as well. I have a few different powders for 45ACP AA5 is the most consistent for me it meters very well.
