Corrosive ammo?

Don't you read these fora? Windex was the secret that won the war for the Allies!People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

haven't you seen enemy at the gates? the russians didn't live long enough to even fire the rifles. i highly doubt the effects of corrosive ammo were at the top of their listSaying that guns kill people is like blaming a pencil for spelling mistakes.Comment

I have heard of windex but, what about us too? Where can i find history on this because it is interesting for sure. Some people make it sound like if you don't tend to the ammo issue asap then your barrel is going to rust fast. I don't have any experience with military ammo but i did fire a box or two because a friend bought some when i took him out last week thx for the infoComment

I might add that many barrels were ruined due to the ammo and not being able to clean them as needed. That is one reason why so many M1Garands have replacement barrels on them for example. Also as long as the rifle worked they did not worry about it. They were not using them on the range or in target shooting comp.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Really?
When Windex was invented in 1933 by Erich Drafahl, it was essentially 100% solvent, and as a flammable product, it had to be sold in metal cans. When modern surfactants were introduced after World War II, the product was reformulated.
The Sam Wise patent #3,463,735 lists several example formulae, one of which is 4.0% isopropyl alcohol (a highly volatile solvent) 1% ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (a less volatile solvent), 0.1% sodium laurel sulfate (a surfactant), 0.01% tetrasodium pyrophosphate (a water softener), 0.05% of 28% ammonia (added more for smell than for cleaning ability[citation needed]), 1% of a dye solution, and 0.01% perfume. This formula was not only significantly less expensive to manufacture, but allowed the product to be packaged in glass bottles and dispensed with a plastic sprayer.
SC Johnson acquired Windex in 1993 and has been manufacturing it since that time.
The product was recently reformulated with more environmentally-desirable solvents.[1]I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.Comment

Ok, if you were in combat back in the day, would you pour you water into the barrel? What was the other thing that was worst then rust in the barrel? This is a new thing for me so i am curious for sure. you never seen them in wartime movies pouring water on their riflesComment

U.S. troops used USGI bore cleaner. It was formulated to remove corrosive salts from the bore. British troops poured water down the bores of their rifles during the cleaning process.Ok, if you were in combat back in the day, would you pour you water into the barrel? The other thing that troops worried about more than rust was getting shot or blown up.

^^That's what I was taught to use as a kid. It seemed almost every adult male was a veteran and they all swore by the solvent available as surplus almost everywhere or Outers. They didn't worry about corrosive ammo, they just cleaned their rifles in the evening after firing them.U.S. troops used USGI bore cleaner. It was formulated to remove corrosive salts from the bore. Some of the people today are comical in their fear of corrosive ammo -- I wish I had a dollar for every post about spraying Windex (or some other magic ingredient -- urine gets mentioned) down the bore before packing up from shooting.
Quit worrying so much. Shoot your guns then clean them.
Oh, and for those of you who can't deal with words you don't already know:

The reason I suggest windex at the range is that it cleans out the barrel better since the barrel is warm. You will be surprised just how much come out with just a few patches. If the barrel is cooled it is more work to clean as well. I also run patches thru my other rifles that do not shoot corrosive ammo with reg bore solvent at the range sometimes for the same reason.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.
