What brass do you prefer? for reloading?

As i sit here today trying to sort by head stamp, 308, 30.06, 270, 7.62 x 39, 30-30, and then on to the mag cases, i'm wondering if its even worth the trouble to make a few cents more per case to sort it all?

the pistol cases i just group together unless someone ask for strait winchester or the like but it long gun R.P. is my personal choice as it reloads more times with less trouble.

please chime in and let me know your feelings on case longevety.

    thanks stan

It's not so much about longevity, but about consistency.

Pistol ammo: I automatically throw out anything that is not brass. Also throw out Amerc and S&B cases. Everything else is loaded.

Rifle ammo: For 308 and 30.06 I prefer LC, Lake City brass. Next in line is Norma. Followed by american manufactured, i.e., Win, Fed, Rem, Hornady, etc.

I dont care about headstamp because will reload anything thats reloadable. Rock bottom priced ammo for me.

For 308 Win, I only use LC Match or Fed match brass. They are almost identical, and very consistent.

For 223, I use LC or Federal, and sometimes RP.

For pistol rounds, I really do not care, but I try to sort it out by the manufacturers.

For my .223 loads that i shoot ouy of my nonprecision guns, i use a mix of brass and i dont really care about brands. I actually hate most LC brass because most are crimpes.

For my precision loads I use winchester brass. Been happy with them.

I'm just curious about your comment about S&B brass. is it not good?

I have a bunch of S&B .38 special brass and the primer pockets are VERY tight, enough to damage some primers. I can't say for any other calibers.

sorting means nothing unless you know how many times each piece of brass has been fired. if this info is known, go ahead a separate by headtsamp.

When I've reloaded a batch of ammo, and they are nicely sitting upside down in the plastic storage box, I swipe a marker across the bottoms. I do this every time so I can see how "used" the brass is, the more marks on it, the older it is.

Of course I've recently bought a tumbler so I'm not sure if the marks will tumble off or not. In anycase, it's cheap and easy to do and if nothing else, identifies your brass at the range.
