Just bought my first neck sizing die. This is safe if the brass has already been fired in it's designated rifle, right? Also, should I "partially neck size" it by turning the die back a turn or two off the shell plate? Pros and cons?

Neck sizing

Neck sizing only works when firing from the same gun that fire formed it. Necking sizing doesnt touch the shoulder so backing off wouldnt do anything.
Con, cant be fired out of any other gun. If you are a benchrest shooter than great. -
Joe -- that is not exactly so. You can not "count" on the case fitting another weapon but it might. I have reloaded cases (neck sized) fired from my 1917 that will fit my springfield but the springfield reloaded cases (necksized) will not chamber in the 17.
Same with my krags, some are interchangable, some are not.Last edited by gunboat; 11-05-2010, 3:01 AM.Comment

Ummmm...OP...can you be a bit more specific?
What "neck sizing die" did you purchase?
Pushing back the shoulder (headspacing), and neck sizing, are two different things.
And also...what brass are you prepping (.223/.308), and what weaponn is it for? (Bolt action, or semi-auto).

As long as the brass is fired from one rifle you can neck size or partially neck size. You can do this to develop loads for your rifle. If this is a hunting rifle, don't use the neck sized cases for the field. You could have a tight chambering round, which could ruin an outing. After 3-4 firings, you will need to F/L size the cases. Use the F/L cases for hunting.Comment
