    30-06 Reloads

Fairly recently started loading my own ammo. Question about loading 30-06 rounds. Measured my rounds to my bore and -.02. Loaded them with 44gr of Varget and shoot very well. My question is, since I have moved the bullet up so much from the Minimum Overall Length, shouldn't I reasonably add more powder then the maximum recommended in the manuals? It is considerably longer then a standard round would be and without adding more powder isn't the pressure decreased. Not an expert so looking for some opinions on this. Should I just work up from the maximum powder weight let say in .5gr and go until it starts to show signs of excessive pressure? Or is 44 still roughly around the max regardless of bullet seating depth?

There are two factors coming into effect there. You have increased the combustion area but you have decreased the leade. The pressure will be lower at the start of the burn but it will peak quickly when the bullet hits the lands quicker.

I've seen loads done over max, but they were worked up very carefully a tenth grain at a time, and examined very closely for pressure signs each step of the way. I usually load for accuracy, and none of my loads approach maximum. But my question is why you feel the need to push things to the limit? If you need more round than that, there's your excuse to get a .338 or other cannon.
