Moly and leading

put about 2k rounds of moly coated lead through the barrel of my xd .45, and starting to get some nasty moly build up, along with some leading in the grooves.

Beyond the normal bore brush and solvents, what are yall using to get it out? Ive spent a good hour trying to get it out, and it barley budges. After some scraping, it seems that its a mix of lead and moly, not just moly.

I've only shot Precision Bullets in my XD40 Tactical and nothing else. I've never been able to get it all out such that the lands and grooves look smooth. But I've only used standard brushing and patching methods with stuff like Slip 2000. I have yet to try ultrasonic, but I think that might be the best route.

Thats exactly what im shooting, along with the same solvent, with a little hoppes mixed in.

Its getting pretty built up right at the start of the rifling, along with right at the muzzle.

try soaking it overnight with several aplications of kroil penitrating oil. it gets under and lifts it off. then brush.

I have the solution for you. I have dealt with the same problem in my XD.

Go to the grocery store or the dollar store and look in the cleaning isle. There are copper coated scour pads that can be cut and rolled up to pull through the barrel, you will see little flakes of lead and other crap building up. Make sure you push through a liberally wet patch of your favorite cleaner then use the copper coated scour pad.

j&b bore paste works great it will get all the junk out of the barrel just put some on a patch and work it in and out then clean as normal

i carefully use the tip end of a aluminum cleaning rod to scrape it

Chore Boy copper scouring pads from the cleaning aisle at the grocery store. Cut a piece out of one and wrap it around a bore mop. Makes fairly short work of lead removal.

Go shoot a box of FMJ through it. That'll take a lot of it out.

+1 on the Kroil. that stuff does incredible things. just bloody incredible. my dad gave me half his bottle but i'm going to just buy a gallon of the stuff. smells good too. almost as good as hoppes.

Get the lead out

The Lewis lead remover works well. I use an Outers Foul Out 3. It electrically removes the lead and plates it onto a rod you put in the barrel. Works extremely well. I use the Foul Out with a different chemical to remove copper when shooting jacketed bullets.
