Cheap scales will just piss you off over time and you'll swear they all suck. That said, a decent one can be had for less than $175 though whichever one you get you need to make sure it's calibrated often and consistently checked for drift. Otherwise you're back to square one.

No matter how cheap or expensive an electronic balance is, always either use DC current or run the AC current through a UPS. Otherwise, the scale will fluctuate with the current. Also, be very aware of other external interferences like cel phones, landline phones, transmitters, etc. They can and do F up electronic balances's reads often. That said, I suggest paying a few extra bucks and getting a DI scientific balance like the MXX-123. Or, go the full Chargemaster combo route.

I always lay a bullet of known weight on mine to check it. Say a 168gr bthp should read 168grs

If only all bulleets were created equal. You will see a variance between bullets of supposedly the same weight.

This one is fair priced and well regarded by it's many users. Only quirks I've noticed is it's a little temp sensitive, but easy to re-zero. I'd recommend getting a set of test weights, it only comes with one that weighs 100 g, well out of the range of most powder charges.

No, check weights are always good to use. But, what I was talking about is the CONSTANT fluctuations in reads due to the fluctuations in household current and outside elctronic sources like phones, buzzers, transmitters, etc. It's good to protect your balance and your loads by using a battery or a UPS to power your balance.
