    Cost effective?

I want to go into reloading but I don't like picking up spent cases. Would it still be cost effective if I just purchase and use the once fired brass from the internet vendors? Is anybody doing this? And which of the vendors are honest, reliable and whose cases are reasonably priced?

It's much less cost effective for common calibers. Google reloading cost calculator and plug the variables.

Any brass vendor will be more expensive then just a person.

    Mind as well buy new. .223 $179. 9mm $180.

I'm thinking you'd lose all financial benefits if you didn't "reload" your casings. That, and making custom ammo tailored to your gun is the whole point.

Whats wrong with picking up spent casings? Is it an O.C.D. thing?

        Is this a joke?

Have you considered one of these?

Does the brass wizard work well on dirt? I have been going back and forth on buying one.

It's obviously not as cost effective, but it is still cheaper than buying new ammo. I can reload .223 for about $0.25 a round buying once-fired brass. Pistol calibers break even when buying brass.
I've never seen an American flag burned at a gun show.

You have to amortize the initial equipment cost, reloader, tumbler, scale and case gages, but even buying once fired brass, powder, and primers, it works out to less than half of new. However, if you only shoot 500 rounds a year, keep buying new until you get to around 500 rounds a month...

I actually don't have one. I know people that have 'em though, and they use them on dirt. The dirt that I shoot on has a lot of rocks and I'm afraid the rocks would also get picked up. I too want to get one.

The biggest savings is in the larger calibers like 30-06 and .308. Handgun is a little bit cheaper to load yourself, but you will have more consistency in your velocities. You just have to find a recipie that your gun produces the best groups with.

I catch mine before they hit the floor.
To the OP, I would say shoot and save your own. Eliminates the doubt about the condition of the brass... but it still doesn't take away the fact you should check your brass every time regardless. That said.. I would just pick it off the range floor (once you got the ok) and treat them all like they were reloading many times.
For me... I'm glad I saved about 75% of all my brass ever shot and had over 400 saved of .223/5.56 when I decided to get into reloading.

My back hurts from frequent bending.
I will probably just get that brass wizard and start saving brass now. Anyway thanks for the info and suggestions.

I see brass on the ground I have a complex. I start to have anxiety attacks over picking it all up.... does the brass wizard collapse? I'd hate to walk into my regular indoor range with a broom sized tool. LOL
