Once fired really once fired, buyer beware!!!

During the ammo shortage, i bought a few thousand 223 brass from various Calgunners in the classifieds, well, finally had a chance to catch up on my reloading and came across a batch I bought (don't remember whom I bought it from). Anyways, since I've been reloading for a while now, you tend to reconize tell signs of reloaded brass. What I can across was primer pockets already swaged, loose primer pockets (you can feel it when priminh the case, I use a hand tool), and overall cartridge case lenght. I ended up loading the ammo and putting it in my "last leg", basically ammo for indoor range where recovering brass if almost impossible (I shoot a LWRC so the brass flies forward).

So just a warning, just because it's advertise as 1x fired, it might not. If the seller does not know this, then I understand, but for those of you selling brass as once fired and know it's been used more, shame on you.. it poise a danger to the user as well as others around them.

Good post! And always a good idea to inspect your brass.
I've personally sold brass. Some randoms picked at the range, but many from factory new ammo... but I inspected all of them like they were all randoms picked from the floor.

But yes.. shame on those that knowingly mis-represent what they are selling. Again, it is up to the reloader to check the brass they are reloading... but these sellers are also putting those "naive" at risk.

I too have bought brass that had already been reloaded. I could tell by the primer. The brass was LC 30.06 and the milcrimp was already gone and the primer was commerical.

I checked the ad and it wasn't advertised a 1 x fired so I let it go. I had gotten a very good price and about 2/3 of the brass was 1 x fired HXP. Even without the LC just the HXP was worth the price I paid.

I just assume the brass has been fired more than once. If you are a beginning reloader you shouldnt be buying someone else's garbage anyway. Only reload your own brass until you can spot bad brass. I just loaded 2000 rounds of .223 and I would say 75% of it was military that had already been swaged. Brass was picked up from various compeitition ranges.

Yea thats the only way for me to find out if the brass has been reloaded or not is by looking at the primer pocket.

              Easy fix.

Just ask the seller to send you a few pix of the primers.

If it is LC brass, it should have "intact" primer rings/crimps.

Range brass I dont pick, if I see someone shoot factory, I would ask if he reloads (if he does not, usually he gives it to me).. I myself would shoot my last leg ammo and leave the brass, last leg usualy means about 5x-6x firings. I know people have reload brass up to 20x (most around 8x) before they throw them away, I shoot $2000-$3000 rifles, so to my 5x or 6x is fine.

I have a few ammo cans full of once fired LC 69 with no crimp and different primers all shot from my M1. It is from the "remanufactured" Talon brand ammo that was popular in the late '90s. Not the best accuracy...but it was only about $.20 a round for M2 ball. Plus, now I don't have to swage the brass!

LC Match brass doesn't have a primer crimp either.

                    Otherwise...your statement is true!

When I buy stuff sight unseen, I assume it's random 1x-5x times fired. I inspect my brass as I process. Any suspect gets chucked.

hell, I pick up whatever I can find and reload it.

Thats whats nice about .45acp, as long as it aint cracked and the primer pocket is decent and the flashole isnt huge, its GTG

.38 Spl is the same way. Fortunately, the folks at my range don't know what they're tossing, and they are firing factory rounds, so lots of 1x fired brass to get. :-)

Always buy from trusted sellers that have been doing it awhile, not like some folks in the for sale section picking up desert brass and selling as x1 fired.
